Axis
« on: March 18, 2010, 04:07:15 PM »
I shot this guy Tuesday morning at my place..Has really good mass on his beams.  The taxidermist was impressed with the mass.  My first Axis, I'm just impressed with the entire hunt.  He came in with a friend that looked like his twin.

He was heavier than he looks.  I couldn't load him without some help from the game hoist.

Really nice Mark. For me it's a toss up between Axis and Fallow as to which is my favorite.

He came in on the front tract where I hunted all season seeing a lot of whitetail.  A few weeks back I saw a large xis pass by down in the dry creek bed.  Might have been the same buck.  This time two came out of the creek bed around 7:30am.  They are beautiful animals to be sure.  I am really looking forward to eating some axis steaks, I've heard so much about.   Saw some sign of feral hog rooting on the new tract, but still haven't seen any.  I hope to go back soon.  I was able to get 22' of gutter installed on the cabin to catch rain water.

picked the steaks and some ground from the axis up yesterday after church.  I am really looking forward to grilling some over an oak fire this coming weekend.  Gave a little of the ground away to friends.  I might get hooked on axis and begin to ignore whitetail!  NOT.  But i am looking forward to my first Axis steak!

If I had axis and/or fallow available where I hunt I'd never shoot another whitetail.

Hey GB,  I haven't seen any fallow out there.  I wouldn't be too suprised though to eventually see some.  I saw NZ billies once, and see mouflon often.   I am headed back out the first weekend of May if not sooner.

Any good steak recepies for axis?   We tend to cook whitetail as chicken fried.

Brenda sue, browns em in a black iron pot and then smothers em with onions and peppers with a rich natural brown gravy served over rice!  Now you have to simmer em a while or they might be a lil tuff! or you can fryem. We always have em tenderized at the processors..........Whooouueeeee! that made me hungry!

Now chicken frying backstrap is the Bomb!

Oldshooter, my stomach is growling now...We had them tenderized already. We did cook up a little of the ground last night as a meat sauce for some wheat pasta.  It is really good and is going to be lunch for e today.   I like the recepie you gave.  Let Brenda Sue know that she is welcome to make some for me anytime.  Where do yu guys live?   ;D

We chicken fry a lot of whitetail steaks and will certainly do the same on some of this axis...   Looking forward to that this weekend..

Old shooter I will be out that way the following weekend.  May 6-8th for a short turn around trip..

Oldshooter that would be great.  As I finish school (in college again) mid July, my plan, Lord willing, is to go to the ranch a lot more often.  I want to try to spend a couple days there every 6 weeks or so.

How large is your friends ranch?  This is a good time to buy, asI am seeing more for sale signs in Edwards, Kinney and ValVerde counties than ever.

Well by Texas ranch standards that is small.  By my wallet, that is hugh!  I hope you are able to buy it, or at least some of it.

Oldshooter, I am about 50 miles south of Rocksprings if that helps.  70 miles from Sonora, so to reach Junction, it would take me an hour or just over an hour with the twisty hwy 377.   Is that a family ranch your friend is trying to hang on to?  There are so many places for sale out there right now, if I had the money I would be buying up more tracts as fast as I could.

Thank rem700-3.   We've seen Axis up and down the roads several times the past 2 years, but this is the first that showed itself for more than a few seconds, and he paid for it.

BTW,  grilled 4 axis steaks tonight with a little lemon pepper on em.  OMG,  GB, you were right, they did put whitetail to shame as far as taste goes....

Yea Mark, its a Family thing, was started by his wifes Family in the 1800's. Its not in trouble, I'm afraid he'll get to old to handle it and sell it or get someone else in his family to take over. I figger when he "goes" away I'll loose my hunting spot. If i could buy him out and let him just stay there and not worry about keeping it up We would both make out good! Its gonna take a whole lot of money I'm sure!

I wish my finances were such that I could even be thinking of buying 5000 acres but that ain't ever gonna happen.

Yup Mark no comparison axis wins hands down over white tail. That and the fact I like the antlers on both axis and fallow better are reasons I say I'd be happy to forget whitetail if I had axis and fallow around. Fallow is also better than whitetail but not as good as axis.

GB, I haven't heard anyone out there talking about seeing fallow.  I might have to spring for a hunt at the Martin Ranch across the highway from us.  He has 3000+ acres, very mountainous like our place, but much bigger.

Fallow are beautiful animals and come in a variety of color phases. My mount really looks as if it were white but it really was spotted it's just that the neck and shoulders were mostly white. They also come in a chocolate color phase with some variation in the darkness of the coat. Personally I think the spotted look best but if like mine it will really look white mounted unless a full body mount and I have neither funds or space for that.

The antlers if they have a nice long wide palmation are really spectacular.

Mine looks as much like I had it pictured in my mind before going on the hunt as it could possibly be. I set a goal to have one with palms at least as wide as my palm and a minimum of a foot long area of such width. I got just that.
