Black Bears reclassified

Just heard Black Bears were reclassified by the Game Board to fur Bearers. That means the pelts can be sold. Looks like time to start harvesting Black Bears.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Will that be for ALL game units or just selected ones? Will the hides have to be sealed? Seems like the BOG did a lot of changes this winter, hard to keep up.

It will be intresting to see how it works out. If there are to many of them why not just make them like deer or caribou insted of haveing to seal them and pull a milk tooth

My biologist friend didn't know the details but was pretty sure the designation is NOT for the whole state. The state requires a lot of furs to be sealed as the single way they can track harvest , sex ratios and get some indication of population conditions. I see no problem continuing the sealing requirement.

My understanding is its state wide. The question now is what will be the trapping limit as a fur bearer

Hmm, I hope you are wrong. We don't have many blackies out this way and we adopted more strict hunting regs a few years ago. Guides have moved in and have made it harder for locals to find bears where they used to. I think quite a few more blackies have been taken since the guides have worked on them more.
Still, we are seeing blackies show up in new places. Don't know why but we may be experiencing more brown bear harvests and that might be allowing the blacks to work closer to the coast than before.

We have lots of Black Bears here in the interior. Expecially after F&G dumped all the ones they removed from the McGrath area.

OK, got it in writing from F&G.
"Statewide"
"All units, allow the sale of Black Bear hides (tanned or untanned) and skulls taken under a hunting license. No sale of gall bladder or any Black Bear trophy, Including rugs, is allowed".

Thanks Rog. Interesting. I hope they don't get over harvested out here. We don't have that many. Up on the Kusko its another story but here they are scarce until you get quite a way into the upper reaches of the Nushagak and Mulchatna.

We have Black Bears but they are hard to find. Because of the Grizzlies the Blacks are spooky. We've got Grizzlies everywhere. Grizzlies are like the proverbial 500 pound canary they go any where they like. And the Blacks stay out of their way. But go farther south and it changes.
