DIY spraypaint?

So I just bought a 1986 Jeep Cherokee and I think I got a good deal on it.  It has 160,000 miles on it, the whole brake system has been replaced.  The rust has been cut out and the interior was fixed.  They guy I'm buying it from rebuilds old cars from the frame up.  Only thing that dosen't work is the air and cruise.  But this is a "hunting rig" anyway....

My issue is he painted it pastel yellow.
Yuck!

I'm thinking about turning my two boys and myself loose on it with a case of camo paint.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

SCP, I think it's a fine idea. I have, however seen the homade camo thing go terribly wrong. I've also seen some examples where folks have used cardboard stencils of leaves and such hot-glued to sticks to keep from getting paint on you and they ended up with something that looked like commercial hunting camo, really cool! How artistic are you and the boys? I'd treat it like a modelling project, get on google images and look or maybe down to the hobby shop and look at some military modelling magazines, that sort of thing. Try to have a plan of sorts is what I'm getting at I guess. You will use a lot more of your base color (probably olive) than the other 2 colors (I'm guessing brown and tan). So... some research and planning (however casual) may pay off in a good look. Here's a pic of a bike I used to own, there was some beer consumed in the process, it kinda shows...

I am mainly concerned about prep work; like sanding or primer suggestions so that it will last.
For the painting "design" I've seen some good suggestions from painting guns.

Well SCP, you've got a 24 year old huntin' rig so I wouldn't get too hepped up about pristine prep... but I would do it on a warm day preferably out of the sun and such. Wash the dang thing (and dry it) first. And try to keep bugs away.. And I would say maybe run some 220 (dry) sandpaper over it but not get too carried away... if yer paint is fisheyeing and stuff then you have problems but Krylon camo paint is pretty forgiving.... I'd mask the window moulding and suchlike (good task for the kids) newspaper over the windows and have at it.  Wear some cartridge masks if you have them.

If you've spray-painted anything before, you have a basic grasp of not getting too close and causing runs, and that sort of thing... and don't do the wheels, nothing looks crappier than paint on tires..

My main point is try to have a plan as to what you are trying to emulate. Hate to have one side looking like a German Heinkel night fighter from WW2 and another side looking like a US 6x6 truck from 1983...

I'm literally in the process of "urbanizing" my YJ, these colors you see were done earlier in the week and when they cure I have a couple more colors I'd like to add. I'm going for an effect similar to the British Berlin Brigade sceme

as to prep just scuff the existing paint with a medium scotch brite pad and wipe down the surface with wax and grease remover

My monitor is dark so I can't tell for sure but if it were me I'd use that yellow as a base color for a desert camo sceme

I would let them go at it. Make sure its prepped good. Im doing the same thing (kinda) with my bronco II. Im just using OD green and blacking out all the trim and emblems. Gonna get some of the white spoke wheels and paint them OD as well. The aluminum wheels on it arent wide enough for 31/10.50x15s. Just my opinion.

Last time I painted a car I wetsanded then rinse and dry,then wiped it down with paint thinner to remove any oil or grease. Used the original paint as primer and had at it. Have fun!

I do shoot my own color and build them from ground up,this truck has all new toys IFS,tilt wheel ,B2M slap stick ,custom everything maybe 3,000 hours over the year to complete

I painted my MJ with Rattle cans. Came out very well, its all in the prep. Once everything is washed to remove any wax, sand everything (scotch brite works well) wipe everything down with a good solvent. I like Solvisol but Acetone works well also. The first pic was in 2005 when I bought the truck. The second pic was two years ago just after painting. (When I was still fat! LOL)

ive got a bright yellow wrangler and someday id like to do the same. The darned thing is just in to good of shape right now. My buddy did his in camo and after the base coat he used stensils and a couple differnt colars of bedliner for the leaves. It came out cool and looks 3d.

About two years ago I was applying a water sealer to my outdoor decks and some of it dripped through the cracks and onto my pickup truck below.  Took me two years to get it off.  It was a tan color.

This has started me thinking that if I ever have a truck that needs repainting, I just might roll on a coat or two of decking water sealer.  I can guarantee that no prep is required and it sticks very well.
