180 Speer in 35 rem. marlin
« on: March 19, 2010, 01:39:15 PM »
Got some 180 pointed flat point .358 bullets, called speer tech. today they say you can shoot them in tube fed but I just dont get that warm fuzzy feeling, speer loading man. #13 used a 336 marlin for testing bullets.Anybody use these in there marlins and if so how did they do on game.

IF it's the same part number (#2435) as in the Speer book, it's listed as a Flat-SP and it works like hotcakes. I've used them in my 356W Big Bore94 Winchester.

Check out the link below, it's a great resource for loading the 35 Remington. But you can scroll down to the Speer 180gr Flatnose Softpoint section if you don't want to read the whole thing. They like to go fast, and they are very accurate.

Used the same bullet in a 35 whelen, and it worked Ok on deer, but seemed a little soft.  Should be excellent at 35 Remington velocities.

I've loaded these Speer 180gr. flatnose bullets in the Marlin 336 & Rem. 7600 with no problems.

Thanks for the replys, this is pretty much what I needed to hear. I have loaded and hunted with them years ago and there deadly on deer but back then I only loaded 2 at a time, I was going to load some for the 357 max but after reading the post frm. MO it looks like they might not expand at the slower vel. might just stick to the 180 xtp's in the max.

They are very accurate in my Marlin.  They need to go pretty fast to expand.  I put one through both front shoulders of a 170lb hog.  He went about 2 feet.

Thats pretty much what I thought also, I load these in the marlin and keep the horn. 180 ss/pb for the 357 max handy.

Never seen a need to. When I load for the .35 Remington I load 200 grain round nose. Now if I ever get one rechambered to .356 Winchester as I've been wanting to do I plan to switch to the Speer 220 FN bullets for it.

I prefer the Remington 200 grain Core-Lokt but I haven't been able to find any.

Try either AA2460 or AA2520.  I'm loading 42 gr of AA2520 and achieving right at 2350 fps.  Others have achieved good velocities with 2460, H-4895 and TAC.  It's a great bullet, and I have taken over a dozen deer with it.  I use it in my Marlin 336, as well as my Remington 760 pump.

The 180 gr Speer is the 1st bullet in this line-up:

The others are the Hornady 180 gr SSP, the Hornady 200 gr FTX, the Hornady 200 gr RN, and the 220 gr Speer FN.
The older I get...The better I was.

How much work have you done with TAC?  I haven't tryed any yet but laid in a few pounds of it to try in several different cartridges.  Looks like it would be a good fit in the 35, 358 Win. 444 Marlin and 45-70.  DP
