Well, my son, Dan and I just returned from a successful boar hunt, at Wilderness Hunting Lodge, in Monterey Tennessee. Thought you boys might want to see how he did with his Handi. He took the 44 mag, and used leverevolution ammo. Most of the hogs we saw there, showed a lot of russian characteristics. More so than any other place I have ever hunted.

Hes's Dan's hog.

He was a brute. I grew up on a farm, and have been around hogs all my life. That ole boar weighed every bit of 325 lbs. It took 3 of us forever to drag the thing 30 ft. to load in the gator! Phew!

Mac, I wasn't with Dan, when he shot it, but this is what he said. The initial shot was quartering, at 50-60 yds. He hit it a little far back. It took off, and he caught up with it, and hit it on the shoulder. It sagged, and started down, but the area on the mtn. side was really steep, and he didn't want to have it go off the side of the mtn., so he put a third shot in for insurance. Funny part is this is the 1st. time in 5 yrs[including Africa] that it took more than one shot out of one of his handi rifles.

As far as the 45-70, what can I say, one shot 40 yds, on the shoulder, with a 300 gr. nosler part., @ 1950 fps. Bang/flop....DRT

This was the same load I used in Africa, on my plains game hunt.

Thanks Mad Dog.. I was wondering how those LE bullets would do on a critter like that. Did you recover any of the bullets? I concur..IMHO...the partitions were some of the best bullets every made for the 45-70..It's a crying shame they had to go and dis-continue making them..

I'm going to try the Speer 300 grain this season to see if it's as good as what many folks are claiming. A-lot of folks swear by it too for a all around bullet..and they are 1/3 the price of what the Nosler's are selling for now..

Mac, the boy recovered 1 bullet. it had lost the front/ but the jkt and lead core held together. However, I didn't get a pic.

Nice hogs! My son and I are heading to Georgia next month for some hog hunting and I'm thinking of buying a H&R .44 mag for the occasion. So far I'm looking at %300 for the rifle....seems kind of steep. May I ask the specifics on your .44 mag cartridge and what kind of scope he used?

groggy, the scope is a weaver 1x5 power. The ammo is the Hornady leverevolution 44 mag factory load. Go to Hornady's website, they have all the info on the ammo. Dan and I have both used the LE ammo, and in the last 2 yrs., we've taken 11 deer with that bullet. I have a 44 mag Marlin 1894, that I could have taken, but my GG hadn't been shot since I took it to Africa, 2 yrs. ago, on a plains game hunt. I personally love the 45-70, and would use it on deer, here in Indiana, if it was legal.

Congrats. on some nice hogs, they do have a nice place up there, I was there nov. of last year and took a 300# boar same as your sons looked just like his, for mine I used a marlin 444 with speers 270 gr. gold dot and like your 45-70 it was bang flop,enjoy the meat I still have a freezer full.

You're so right about the Russian characteristics!

I see a lot of hogs down here in S. Texas...and a few are in the 200-300 lb. range. But most don't show much European blood. Only occasionally do you see that here in my area.

necchi, we learned the pic taking from our ph's in South Africa. However, he was only 2 ft. behind the hog. It's amazing what you can do with a camera!

. Also, we ate some chops, Thurs. nite marrinated in teryaki/pinapple, on the grill, Awesome!

D Humbarger, naw, it isn't. The gun was unloaded, and I was a ft. or so behind the hog. It was the camera, but I must admit, I thought the same thing, when I saw the pic, after posting. Shoulda placed the gun at more of an angle.

Personaly I dont care how far you were from them hogs when the photos were taken ! All I can say is great job ! What are we sapposed to do stand in front of them and say oh they weren't very big

We decided to not do shoulder mts., mainly because our trophies from Africa, will be arriving in the next 3 weeks. Not sure where we're gonna put em all.

What I hope to do is pull the teeth on both hogs, and mount them on a plaque. Then put an 8x10 photo, underneath. Net result is nice tropy of the trip for under $50, rather than $450-500 mount. The savings go a long way in paying for another trip.

Tell ya what I'm gonna do, my boy has used nothing but a handi rifle/shotgun for all his hunting. If I run into a good used 45-70, I'm gonna get it and restock it for a companion to my guide gun. Had a 30-30 handi yrs. ago, and like a dumba** I let it get away. I'm in no hurry, so am just gonna look around.

Was your son backed up by others in the hunting party carrying a repeater rifle, pistol or revolver ≥ 44 Mag?

Just wondering, as much as I like the Handi's if my sons and I do eventually get around to hog hunting here in Missouri, I will have to decide the most economical way to fill the backup safety role. Three Handi's and a revolver would be perfect.

brian, nope, he was up on the mountain by himself, and took care of the hog, no backup. He's hunted with some kinda H&R rifle or shotgun, since he was 10 yo., he's 28 now. He has hunted bear, whitetails, mountain lion and plains game, with me in South Africa. The vast majority of his kills have been 1 shot. However, as he told me, he hit the hog a little far back, and it took 2 followup shots, to finish him off. He wasn't worried, in the least!

I don't think I could get him to hunt with anything other than a single shot.
