I'm about to get an Encore and 3 barrels, including a 44 mag and a 45-70 carbine (with butt and forend). I've been reloading for 44mag Rugers and 45-70 Marlin lever guns for some time. Is there any information (as opposed to impressions) about the actual strength of the Encore (with TC barrels) in these calibers? In reloading data you usually see some relatively hot loads for the Marlin, but even hotter loads for the Ruger #1 only -- is the Encore the equal of the Ruger #1, a VERY strong gun? If not, is it as strong as the Marlins? Any experience or data on this would be welcome.

I'm new to this, it's a great board and I've already learned a lot. Thanks!

It will handle the #1 loads, but in my opinion some calibers are pushing the limit. The 45/70 being one of them. Thay baby is going to whump you good. I know, I have one.The 44 mag is a pussy cat in an Encore. The 444 Marlin is starting to get pretty potent. You going to love your Encore in any caliber you get. Have fun! KN

I have personally loaded Ruger#1 max loads in my 15" Encore. Yes it was extremely painful after 3 rounds. On the good side it teach the guy who thought his 50AEwas punishing a thing or two. :lol:

Note that the factory manufactures Encore barrels for the various belted magnums. Based on that, the Encore is stronger than a Marlin. I doubt that it is as strong as a #1. As long as you stick to sane handbook data the Encore will be strong enough.

Brian HHI 7265: My 45/70 Encore barrel has a short throat. When did they start putting a long throat in them? Mine won't even chamber Garrett 540 grainers. Did I misread your post?

My Encore has the short throat too. It does not make a lot of difference with many bullets. Most 300 grain bullets are so short they do not project far in to the neck. Many of the 500 grain bullet designs have a bore diameter nose that results in the 3/4 inch long nose projecting far into the throat with no interference.
