460 S&W
« on: March 20, 2010, 08:09:48 AM »
Has anyone rechambered a handi fo 460 s&w?
i have heard that it has better ballistic than the 500, supposedly doing well in revolver out to 300yards with lot less drop than 500.

Yup, GENDOC and I have as well as a few others, I get 2875fps with the 200gr Hornady factory ammo from my 20" Carbine barrel, accuracy isn't the best tho at ~2-3" 100yds groups. It does a little better with the 250gr SST at up to ~2500fps.

I have a custom rifle builder about 2 mi. from me, they werte telling me they do well out to 300yds.
They can do anything to a rifle, or barrel.
They were wanting me to rechamber a handi barrel for the 460, said he needed a 45lc or 454 casul, I have neither.

I just got my 45lc classic yesterday.  After the new rubs off I'm sure the idea of moving up will be tempting.  I was wanting to know what the cost is of a rechamber is.  I know some of the cost has to include the cost of the reamer and I have heard that it is possible to rent one.
This sounds like a simple job for a gunsmith but in the 25 years of shooting I have only needed two trips to the shop.  The next thing I can't figure out is what pistol bullet can handle that much speed.  Sounds like magnum rifle performance for the cost of a rimfire rifle.

The reamer can be rented from 4D for less than $50 incl shipping both ways, I did mine by hand, see the 357 Max reamer sticky or link in the FAQs for info on how to ream.

Quick question about the 460 rechamber.  I read on another handgunning site that the 460 S&W in a pistol requires progressive rifling - starting out at 1:100 and then going to the normal twist inorder to avoid excessive throat erosion.  This is obviously not available in a 45LC BC that has been rechambered.  Has anyone who has done the rechamber seen any evidence of excessive throat erosion?

As DP stated, SB2 only, the Casull and 460 have SAAMI max average pressures of 65kpsi, right there with the 270 Win, definitely not SB1 friendly.
