My first kill today with my Marlin 917-V in the 17 HMR!
« on: March 20, 2010, 02:17:33 PM »
Well I made my first kill today with my Marlin 917-V in the 17HMR and my first Groundhog of the year. I shot him free hand (no rest) at about 50 yards while he was walking and still managed a head shot. :o ;D Here is a picture of it and some of the farm land I have permission to hunt on. Dale

inside 150 yards the .17HMR will really slap them down.
I have it on good authority that the telepromter is writing a stern letter.

Congratulations... and very kewl Dale.   No doubt the 17HMR is a keeper for diggers, and is perfect for them same as it's little sister the 17HM2 is on smaller species.   The second Hummer I bought is a Marlin too, but mine is a 17VS I got as soon as they came out in 2002.   Gave it a Rifle Basix trigger, BKL mounts and had two custom 5-shot mags made for it before I every shot it.   It's my favorite carry "Hummer" for walking up varmints.   My first Hummer is the Bullberry prototype I had well before the ammo was even available to the public for sale.   I got it and the ammo early to do some field testing for them.  This is my long range Hummer off a rest, and is good to past 300 a ways.

Anyway, I enjoy hunt stories and pictures more than anything else I think these days.  So I especially enjoyed your pictures that really show the lay of the land you hunted.    It's beautiful, and so much different than what I hunt.    Hope you don't mind but I'll add some pictures of diggers hunting out west with the Hummers.

1. A tiny Whitetailed Antelope Ground Squirrel shot off the Joshua Tree offhand at about 80 yards on a walking hunt.  Box of Hornady V-Max for size comparison.

2. Typical Whitetailed Antelope GS habitat.

3. First test run of the Bullberry Hummer to see how the 17gr V-Max did on flesh on a friends ranch.   These are Belding Ground Squirrels shot out the window of the truck from 150 out to just over 200 yards (laser ranged).

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Some more pictures...

4. Digger Wars habitat (an annual Belding shoot I used to host for out-of-state friends on several farms I had contracts with).

5. Digger Wars scouting trip and shooting off the rear deck of my truck.

6. Typical setup at Digger wars.

7. Tag teaming them at Digger Wars.

Thanks for the replies. I still need to pick up a 223 or 243 this summer for the long range shots. I have added a couple more farms just recently to the ones I am alowed to hunt. I have at least a couple thousand acres of Groundhogs to control. :o ;D Dale

Have you decided on what kind of rifle you want to get in 223 or 243?
You planning on something just for varmints or deer also?

I think I will most likely get a 22-250 or another 243 in the Remington 700 SPS Varmint with the 26" barrel. I plan on building a AR 15 in the 223 this summer so that is why I probably will not go that route for my varmint caliber. Dale

;D Dale, your from Pa.  I am not sure if you ever read Pa. Game News..there was a guy from your area that was a real chuck hunter and deer hunter..He used to write for the News often when it was a real outdoors magazine not just a Game Comm. mouthpiece...Anyway he often wrote about chuck hunting and calibers...He used them all starting with a little Sako .222...In I would say the 60's..He then got a .243 Sako. In time had it rebarreled to .22-250...his comments on the calibers were interesting to any serious chuck hunter..I used to really get with it when I visited relatives in the summer, but the areas I hunted did not offer the extremely long shooting in Green Co...this guy lived in the little town of 84...I am not sure about mentioning his name over the net, but if you are interested drop me a p.m.  he was a guy I always wanted to visit when I was back, but never got to do it.....Anyway, if I were buying a chuck rifle, it would be a heavy barreled .22-250 OR a .220 swift...Infact, as I look at the next years of life, it seems like Pa. chuck hunting may be again a possibility...I HAVE  a super accurate Swift and two .22-250's just waiting for action....Good shooting...

I really like the 243 for Groundhogs. I had a 243 Remington 700 SPS Varmint and I took 60 of them little guys with it 2 summers ago. I even killed a couple at about 500 yars with it. I have never owned a 22-250 and it does interest me and I have to decide between the two of them. The wind does not affect the 243 to bad and I am affraid the wind will affect the 22-250 pretty good. Also when I to start reloading it would be cheaper to load for the 22-250. So you see there are pros and cons to consider. I only live about 40 miles or so from 84 and I also have gone deer hunting in Greene county with my nephew. Dale
