New rossi 223
« on: March 21, 2010, 05:57:08 AM »
So, I bought this combo, 20 ga and 223 for Christmas and finally got to take it out 2 weekends ago to see if it would go bang. It goes bang. The factory open sights are attrocious. I really couldnt get to first base. Some one here reffered to MOT with open, sights (minute of toaster) and I believe it. Anyway, Went out and bought some millet raised rings for it and a weaver 92S base, then salvaged a spare 3-9x33 trophy scope I has from an old 243 (that one got a new nikon pro-staff) and mounted it all together. I hope that scope responds to adjustments, otherwise, I'll be buying a new scope. I have some remington 55 grain UMC, FMJ's I am planning on trying with it. Wish me luck that it all comes together with the salvaged scope! This will be my first high velocity varmint/ predator rifle. EJ

That's a nice combination.  Would be interested to know what kind of groups you get with the .223.

Yeah, I am aiming to get out this weekend. I'll post the results here as soon as I get some groups in. MY only real concern at this point is the used scope. I cant remember why I pulled it off that old 243. Anyway, time will tell. EJ

I am getting cloverleafs with 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Silver Tips and IMR 3031 at 100 yards. I just ordered 500 Dogtown 55 grain softpoints and benchrest primers.

I still havent goten a scope for that 223. I think I am going to get a cheaper bushnell. Any suggestions? By the way, the reason I aint gettin an expensive scope is because most of my scope money was spent already. I aint a rich man at all, but I did get a zeiss conquest for my model 70 7mm WSM. I love it! The rest of my hunting rifle wear nikon pro-staff scopes. So, I already know the value of a good scope, this 223 rossi is just an occasional coyote-prarie dogger. EJ

I think my next scope is going to be a Redfield.

the cheap CenterPoint scopes at Wal Mart are pretty decent for under $70, heavy though, buddy has 3 of them, I have one.

I also have a CenterPoint.  Nice scope for the money.  Made by Leapers I believe.  Lot's of features.  Yea, it's heavy, but I just use it at the range anyhow.

got a scope on it, took it to the range, it can do about 1.5 moa. with remington UMC 55 grains. Not bad, shoot pretty good for a varmint rifle. I am pretty happy with the results. EJ

My friend bought a used Rossi .223 with a scope that goes up to 24 power and he is just getting 10" group at 50 yards.  I think 24 powers is too much, but I want to help him out so any more suggestions willo be appreciated.

And no, I don't know which scope or the exact model of the rifle, but it is a Rossi .223.

Sounds like the scope is broke.  You could get better groups with iron sights, or no sights at all.  Heck, you could probably get better groups blind folded.

Here's an update.  He changed scopes and ammo and still only 9" at 50 yards.  He is not a bad shot either and is using a shooting bench at our club with sandbags.  I'm at a loss as to what is causing this.  We're ging back to the dealer tonight as it was a trade in rifle.  If anyone has any suggestions it will be appreciated.  I cannot think what else it could be.  He's hoping to trade it up for a new Rossi.

My Rossi shoots about 1" to 1.5" at a 100 yards!!! (Depending on Me Too!!!). I us a Nosler 40 grain Balistic Tip and 15.6 grains of AA-5744 with a 3x9x40 mill dot scope. I love mine and plan on getting the 22lr & .243 single shot pistol and a 22-250 Rifle as well. I highly recommend a Rossi if you like to shoot and are on a budget...Love Em'!!!

Jus picked up an unused"used" 2006 223HB. First thing I did was convert the fact. swivels to quick detach studs by drilling and filing..1in 10 twist I hear so going to try it this coming week with some 55gr and see how she does.Has a no name 4-12(looks very Tasco) so if she shoots well I'll upgrade. Hope to get some of the better results some of you have had. If it's minute of groundhog I'll be content for what I paid.

Haad a little spare time so took the little ss out to a friends place and ranged 78 yards from the truck to a good backstop. 55fmj Rem from Wally World did about 1.3in for 6(with 1 flyer to bring the group to 2.4) shots at the distance shooting off of some bags on the tailgate and my dove stool. Not the best shooting position but  I'm happy with the initial outing on my 135.00 Rossi. Look forward to getting it out for a real session soon.

Check the crown.  If it's nicked or not even looking there is your problem.  If it is the crown any gun smith worth his salt can cut a new crown and it shouldn't cost too much.
