Yes, I have one and it's a real handy Handi. I have always had a soft spot for the old warhorse .45 ACP and had one stubbed a couple of years ago, it is a sweetheart....<><....:)

My plan was to do a 17" barrel or so and thread it for a can eventually.  Working on getting a gun to mod now...nothing like putting the horse in front of the cart.

I can't do pictures, sorry. Some day I may learn how. People say "Oh, it's easy, just......", the problem is they tell you how to do it in a language I am not familiar with, terms that mean nothing to me, j-peg, pdf's, and other unknown stuff....<><....:)

I don't have a 45 acp in a Handi but I have a 16'' Encore barrel
I love!! Friends and I like to ring a gong with it at 100 yards. I
reccomend a 45 acp in a carbine length barrel, GREAT FUN!!

I too am interested in a 45acp barrel, how difficult is it to have one made, and by who??

I am also interested in getting one.  Maybe if there is enough interest, we could do a group buy for the barrels and get them stubbed.

For my stubbed .45 ACP I sent in a 20 gauge barrel and the gunsmith then "stubbed" in a SS barrel which he supplied. He turned to my desired dimensions (full diamter HB) and added a muzzle brake that I wanted,
he them bead blasted the SS barrel to match the  finish I saw on a SS revolver he had done and requested the same finish. I asked he leave the chamber area of the 20 gauge stub in the blue and I think it came out excellent, just exactly how I wanted it. He thought perhaps a differnet approach but I wanted it this way. He requested I send the frame and forearm with the 20 gauge barrel, the barrel and stub were perfectly fitted and the forearm was bedded to that particular barrel. The gunsmith normally builds long range accuracy guns and builds all his guns to extract the best possible accuracy from them, just the way he does things. All he really needs is a 20 gauge H&R shotgun from you and then discuss with him what you want...<><....:)

If anybody has a source for an inexpensive barrel blank (.451-.452) let me know.  I'm used to finding blanks cheap at places like Numrich  ;).  Best price I have so far for a new 45ACP blank is a 28" Shilen for $127.  Maybe I could use a less expensive 14" blank ($80) and turn it into a 'liner' fixed inside a longer (legal) 'donor barrel' like a 20ga. Hmmmm . . . I think I might have have a plan!

Could you use a .410 shotgun for this conversion? Not sure of the pressures, but if you can put .357's and .44 mags on an SB1 frame it looks like it would be ok.

According to the SAAMI specs I have, the pressure should be fine on an SB1 frame.  The max average for the .410 is only around 13,500psi, but the .357 and .44 mags are 35,000psi.  45ACP is in between at 21,000 to 23,000psi (+P).

MSP, your pics are hosted on Snapfish which requires registration and login to view the album, there should be a link in your album there to provide a URL for anyone to view them. Personally, using GBO MyHostedPics is real easy to use and free, so that's what I use if I can't attach pics.  ;)

Hopefully I can start on mine in a few weeks too.
I'm used to weird projects and am a gunsmith at a big multi state retailer...If I get mine done soon, maybe we can do more.

thanks

Thanks Tim, the picture of barrel alone is an unpolished finish after stubbing and fitting the compensator of the style I choose. The picture of the complete gun shows the barrel with the fine bead blasted finish on the SS that I requested with the reciever part left blue (and drilled and tapped) at my request. The barrel is a total of 16.5", anything more would have been non productive with the small powder capacity of the .45 ACP case. The stock is an old one I sent with the rest of the parts to be turned into a .45 ACP Handi, a frame, 20 gauge barrel, and a stock set. In retrospect I might have sent a better stock set. The gunsmith, who is into long range and accurate rifles among other things, fitted and pillar bedded the forearm to that particular barrel. I will someday either refinish the stock set that is on it or put a better buttstock on it and then refinish both the pillar bedded forearm and newer buttstock to match. Heck I might as well turn the buttstock that is on it into a straight english style and replace the recoil pad. That would make it a real handy Handi. By the way, it now wears a Red Dot for fast target aquistion and it's great!!!....<><....:)

That's a nice looking rifle. I used to have a 45 Winmag pistol and wonder what kind of velocity you woukd get in a rifle like that.

unknown on the velocity, I was not worried about it. If you wanted you could have one made up in .45 ACP Super or have a .45 ACP redone to .45 Super, brass is still readily available and the Super has more power, if you feel the good old .45 ACP is lacking in power or you wanted more velocity. I am very happy with this, it is just what I wanted....<><....:)

The beauty of the 45ACP is that 'it is what it is.'  Unlike the higher pressure pistol rounds, there is little to gain with the 45ACP in a rifle unless you handload it beyond normal pressures.  Even then you have limited case capacity.  If you want a 'thumper,' go with a 45 Colt or 45-70.

My quest has started.  I picked up a Versa Pack last night and plan on doing a stub job on the .410 barrel.  I have some .451" blank at work I'll probably use if I can't find something better or cooler.

Here we go
