Uberti Baby rolling block load questions
« on: March 21, 2010, 01:49:33 PM »
I've recently acquired a super nifty Uberti "baby block" in .357 magnum. I no next to nothing about this platform and thus have a question about loads for such a rifle.

My brain tells me that being factory chambered for .357 any loads within SAAMI spec should be fine. Holding this svelte dainty firearm my gut tells me I should worry about my 158grn 16.5g of 296 load I shoot through my marlin.

What's the consensus on loading for such a rifle? Or please share any other rolling block specific tips I should know.

oh yeah lots.

it's a dang good shooter off the bench IF you can resist the overwhelming urge to stand up and shoot at random "things" on the berm. The bore "slugs" .355" so watch out about using low low pressure loads as you can and WILL stick a bullet in the bore.

forget about shooting 357's AND 38's  POI with 38 specials is a good 2 FEET higher at even 50 yards. I just shoot magnums as it actually takes a different
 front sight to shoot 38's

and at around 5lbs (possibly less) yes it's VERY VERY handy to tote about specifically with the stretch sling pictured

I have one of those and absolutely love it. I hope to use it back home some day to get a Whitetail. It shoots very good, I wish they made them in 357 Max.

My problem is that I would have to scope the rifle to hit anything, and that beautiful straight buttstock sits so low that I would have to float my chin in the air to see through the scope.  I had the Uberti rolling block in .50 caliber blackpowder muzzleloader, and that's practically what I had to do.  Great gun though.

Nice Carbine!
I have a Uberti Baby RB too, and it`s the carbine that comes with me in the back pack on hikes.
It will handle any factory .357 mag ammo. I handload for mine, but only use 180 gr cast bullets and nothing in 158gr so I can`t comment on the load that you have chosen.
I have a peep sight on mine, and have discovered that the POI is way different with .38 special vs .357 mag even at a measly 25 yards.

I have just reamed the chamber to .357 maximum, and will soon work up a 180gr maximum H110 load with the chronograph. If you read my posts on this subject, you will see that I too have researched the saami CIP CUP pressures for this rifle.

my walk around rifle is a baby sharps in 44-40, a very light rifle, tho not as flat a shooting rifle as the 357 mag.  the target was shot at 100yds from a rest. eastbank.
