Any .41 Caliber Fans? Need Project Input
« on: March 22, 2010, 03:35:00 PM »
Picked up a nice .411 14 twist caliber Shilen blank today - trying to figure out what to build with it.

The obvious choice would be something legal for whitetail here in Indiana - which immediately got me thinking of a 414 Super Mag with a .411 throat.

That got me thinking of a .41 WSSM using .405 Winchester and 450-400 Nitro projectiles.

Then decided why not just build a 450-400 just to screw around with, Hornady has economical brass these days.

Then was confused as to why I'd pick a limey cartridge over the .405 Winchester.  Nigel isn't signing my paychecks anymore.

Whew.

Lets hear it.

What kind of velocity would you get from that. I looked up the .405 win and assuming it was blackpowder. It was pushing a 300 gr soft point to 2200. That would run even faster in a with with todays powders, I would think. Nut then cutting it back to Indiana length, what would it get us?

What is "Indiana specific" about this project. Under 2" OAL or some such requirement? I'm making an assumption that it has to be a handgun of some sort. I had a 14" TC BULL Barrel in 41mag a lot of years ago and it would flat out pound you with heavy 282gr cast loads. How about one of the GNR wildcats, say the 454casull case necked down to 410? Need a little more input as to what you'd like to do with this?

What is "Indiana specific" about this project

Need a little more input as to what you'd like to do with this?

Here are the specifics on the Indiana "Pistol Caliber Rifle".

The rifle cartridge must:

(A) have a bullet of three hundred fifty-seven thousandths of an inch
(.357) diameter or larger;

(B) have a minimum case length of one and sixteen hundredths (1.16)
inches; and

(C) have a maximum case length of one and six hundred twenty-five
thousandths (1.625) inches

It'll be a rifle, as the barrel contour won't allow making two pistol barrels out of it.

I'm not a terrible .410/.411 fan, but if somebody is interested in building something legal for Indiana hunting - here it is.

Otherwise, I'll probably build a boomer out of it and play with it awhile.

Nothing like a Nitro Express for charging Indiana groundhogs.

Nut then cutting it back to Indiana length, what would it get us?

Looks like too much case taper to do it the way I'd want to on the 405 case, would have to form a quasi shoulder.

The WSSM case would hold +/- 60.5g of H20.

I missed the part about him saying it was Indiana specific. He is from Indiana and a specialty ammo, gun maker ;). Not sure why it would have to be a handgun, It is a long barrel. I am thinking he got a deal on a barrel in a Indiana deer legal cartridge, would like to make something cool out of the norm for a deer gun. Probably just looking for ideas of what people maybe interested in? ;) Visit his website, Has some good medicine for Indiana deer rifle hunting.  http://www.bfgcartridges.com/

Oh yeah, welcome to the INDIANA forum page.
