I have been collecting N frames for a long time. I went to a gun show this weekend and bought a couple of K frames, just M&Ps. They are probably the single most common handgun on the face of the earth, and maybe not as exciting as a Triple Lock, but I like this one and am going to keep it. the pre-war grips number to the gun and the finish isn't bad. Nice pistol, shows a little wear near the muzzle suggesting it was carried in a holster at one time.

You are right the S&W M&P is the staple Gun of S&W. They have sold more M&P's than any other handgun mostly to Police agencies so finding one without Holster wear is Very hard. Shown below is a few of mine. The first from 1939 and second from 1947...Both have the hard to find Barrel length of 5"...along with my Pre-War M&P in 32-20 Winchester Caliber with a Nickel finish and 6" Barrel. Hammerdown

Your pictures show that even for a lowly M&P the boys at Smith & Wesson knew how to finish them. At this point I have a 4", 5" and 6" gun in 38 and a 6" blue 32-20. My 32-20 happens to have a very heavy main spring, and the action is a little tough. Not usual for these. Shotgunner

Very nice pistols....I have only owned one fixed sight revolver...a 45 acp and foolishly let it get away...It shot to the point of aim with factory ammo..I have looked at any number of M & P revolvers, but have wondered how difficult it is to load ammo to get these to shoot to the point of aim...what do you say...

I have found that they either shoot to the sights or they do not. Heavy bullets will raise the point of impact and there is a large range of bullets to choose from. Once in a while I get one that shoots left or right. Not much to do about that. I have a re-barreled 38-44 Heavy Duty that puts 158 grain bullets right on the top of the front sight. I have been packing it around the farm, even shot a couple of woodchucks with it. The fixed sight guns are more useful then some have been led to believe. Shotgunner

I shot the pre-war gun yesterday. It put 5 wadcutters in a group a little over an inch at 50', off-hand. Point of impact was slightly left of center, maybe 1/4" and right on the top of the front sight. I will shoot some heavier bullets. This one is a keeper. Shotgunner

You're going to love the way this gun shoots! Mine is a S serial numbered post war model but, the same gun as yours.

I just picked up an Old M&P at my local gun store. It is a nickel 6 inch that has been neglected in some drower for years and got some serious corrosion on the outside of the gun. I spent a day cleaning it up and removing rust. I found that most of the pitting and disfiguration of the finish is superficial and looked worse than it was. Still the revolver is far from mint. The really good thing about it is that it is tight as a drum and has an excellent DA and SA trigger pull. I would kind of like to know when it was made. Its serial # is 241xxx from the bottom of the butt strap. I think it is worth the $125 I paid for it.

Shotgunner, There was a guy named Jim Cirillo who wrote a book called
"Guns, Bullets and Gunfights" - he was a NYC cop who had 17 street gunfights, taught combat shooting to the NYPD, and lived long enough to die in a car accident in his 70's. For most of his police career - and most of his shoot outs - he used the old S&W Model 10, to me one of the finest service revolvers ever made. This and the Model 13 and other K frame service Smiths - were the equivalent of the old SAA, the guns used by the real everyday gunfighters. Solid, smooth and accurate shooters that survived decades on the street and still work just fine.

Yes, I am a fan - my wife owns and loves to shoot an old Model 15 Combat Masterpiece that once was mine (till she shot it...)

I used to read some of his work. Was he the one who coined the term NY reload? ( a second loaded gun ). As I recall he survived several gun fights. It is too bad that most of the writers of today have no real experience. I miss Skeeter, Elmer, Askins and the others. Shotgunner

Shotgunner, your comment about the Skeeter and the others made me think of how many of todays shooters don't even know these fine writers and gunmen...this bunch on the market to day are exfishermen turned gunwriter because they got that job...the old timers were shooters first and then writers....Elmer has been gone almost 30 years....

Tough to realize how old we are....have a dozen or so letters from him that are with the books he wrote...every once in a while, I get them out in the winter and reread them... those guys were shooters first, then came in to writing because of what they knew...these guys today, are writers first who came to shooting because it is a job....

I enjoyed your response and it led me to reflect back on the .44 Associates of who Elmer was a key Player back then, along with Philip Sharp and many others. The .44 Associates were lovers of the .44 Special round and took it to levels not dared to in today's world. These guys were serious Target shooters and it was them who prompted S&W to Build the Final series of the .44 Hand eject Target revolver being the Forth series of 1950. Shown below is one that shipped very early out of the factory and has the Older style Pre-War extractor knob on it. It's factory letter states it was one of the very first ones to have shipped out of the factory, but other's did not share the same Enthusiasim in this caliber as the .44 Associates did as this one shipped in Mid 1951 one year after it's release which is a real slow start for any new introduction.

Beeeutiful S & W.....What a piece of art...Your comments on the .44 Associates reminded me that Elmer often mentioned the target shooters in Tenn. and Ky. that held turkey shoots at long range with .44's specially sighted for those ranges...You have a beautiful firearm there...enjoy...

dogngun , you left out the best part about Cirllio , he carried 2 mod 10's to most of those fights . Sait it was fastest reload. But the truth was he was forced by policy to carry those or a double bbl shotgun back then .Seems NY police were trained if the other guy had any other gun he was a bad guy . When he retired and moved to FL. he could choose any gun he wanted and went with a Glock of all things.
