Scope rings for .223 Handi heavy barrel

Hi i am new to the forum and was looking for suggestions on a ring set for a 40mm scope. I also ran to the hardware store and spent 50 cents on a rubber O-ring for floating my forearm. Worked like a charm.

Also I found this gun at a show and got the guy down to 150.00. Is that a good price for a used handi in 95% condition?

Yeah I was thinking that I would probably need high rings. Thanks for the replies. It's nice to have such a great source for these little rifles. I looked up my serial number and found out my gun was made in 2002. Would that be a 1-9 twist barrel, or a 1-12? Thanks for the help!

1:12", they didn't start making 1:9" until 2005 or 2006, unless it's a late accessory barrel on an older frame.

Thanks Tim. Do you have any pet loads? I am thinking a lighter bullet like a 45gr would perform best in that barrel. But that is just a guess.

Just factory ammo, the win white box 45gr JHP from Walmart shoot so good that I've never handloaded for mine, I stocked up when it was $13 a box of 40, now it $25 a box.

I will start with the Walmart Winchesters. I always save my brass, so they will be reloaded soon enough!!!

FWIW, if medium rings will clear why go with high? It will just make you perch your head up on the comb more. Of course, if that fits your cheekbones better, OK, its all what works for you.

Yeah you are right. I am from the school of thought that the closer the scope is to the barrel the better. Anyone have any good ideas for a 4-12 scope that wont break the bank?

Thanks for the reply Fred. I was at the Sportsman's Guide retail store today and went with a 4x12x44 Federal Intensity made by Weaver. I bought it on a suggestion from the guy working the counter who owns a couple himself. It has parallax adjustment and a lifetime warranty. I compared it next to a Pentax Gameseeker 4x12x40 and the Pentax was much less clear, and the eye relief was terrible. I hunt with a 3x9 Pentax and have been very happy with that scope. Hopefully this Federal will hold zero well.

They are weaver high rings. Medium wouldn't clear the hammer. But some companies highs are like other companies mediums. They do fit very well.
