got a spruce hen Sunday
« on: March 22, 2010, 10:21:19 PM »
After the slow day on Saturday, the boys didn't want to go out Sunday. I went, took the chainsaw and some stuff I wanted to get to the cabin before the snow melted. I don't snogo all the way to my cabin. Walk the last 1/4 mile so lazy theives won't plague me. On the walk I jumped a spruce hen. Shot it out of a tree w my 22 Ruger Mk2. Missed another one.

Lots of folks say spruce hen this time of year taste bad 'cause all they have been eating is spruce needles for months. I rolled this one up tight in heavy foil with 3 strips of chopped bacon and set it on the back of the grill while I did steaks. Turned it now and then. When I opened it up it was great, tender, not sprucy at all! The meat tends to be dry no matter what, so I wish I'd put in another 1-2 strips of bacon. Even so, I thought it turned out well. And no soaking.

Got a good load of firewood too. Two great days in a row.

I heard one yesterday at the park. I guess its time to look around but them might just see a blacky also. Sounds like 22lr for hens and big pistol for bear
