Help, need parts for an 03-A3.....
« on: March 23, 2010, 11:38:39 AM »
Just recently picked up a 1942 Remington 03-A3 and when taking it apart to check and clean it, found the bayonet lug band and screw were stripped. Also, was there a front sight hood made just for the 03-A3? If so, would like to find one as mine didn't come with it.
So, anybody here know where I might be able to find these parts? TIA

OOPS, just looked at the barrel markings, Rem 1943.

None of my 03's have a hood either, and I'm not sure which guns had that.  Don't know where to get parts either.  If I was you I'd get on M1903.com  http://m1903.com/ and ask both of those questions on the forum.  A very informative site for 1903 rifles.  good luck.

Have you checked eBay?

The Fulton Armory Co. use to carry all of the parts.  Try them.

That's a good site, Manny, but even they don't have the bayonet lug band and screw.  :(

They are there or they were yesterday.... 1903A3 1903 A3  03A3 ......use different searches.  There's even some complete stocks.

Yep, they made a front sight hood that snaps around the barrel and over the sight.  There's also a canvas front sight and muzzle cover with a strap that goes around the barrel and snaps back on it'self.  The front barrel bands and bayonet lug for the 03-A3 are usually hard to find.
You got a nice rifle.

Hi Hank,
I picked up a couple of the front sight hoods off eBay, and while they did clear the front sight blade, were just too durn close to really be able to see the target very well, I would guess they were made for the 1903. I am also having a hard time finding the bayonet lug band and screw. While the stripped screw is a kinda tight friction fit and won't come off, I still would like to replace it someday. In spite of the stripped screw, it's in really good shape with a four groove barrel (two groove barrel would just too weird to me).

BTW, out of curiosity, would a M1 Garand front sight work on an 03/A3? Or is it a bit too low?

When you restore a military rifle, as with any other restoration, you have to be really patient and look around.  The hunting for the parts is suppose to be part of the fun.   It's not suppose to be an exercise in frustration. :-)

Keek checking online, and eventually you will find it.  Also, go to as many large gun shows as you can, and look at the tables where guys have parts for U.S. rifles.  You will eventually find one.

If I had a front cap and the only problem was that the screw hole was stripped, I think I would just casually talk to a few old grizzled gunsmiths, and as them what the classic trick is for fixing this problem.  Alot of the gunsmith books from the 50s and 60s had tons of info on unusual tricks to fix common problems.  People didn't just throw stuff away.

  Just my thoughts.

Thanks for your thoughts, manny, they meant something to me. I found a like-new bayonet lug band on ebay, but it had no screw!  :(

My understanding, from back in the 1950's when Springfields were common and cheap, is that the front sight hoods were designed for shipping protection only, and not intended for later use.  I've never seen  any of the old parts lists or nomenclature charts that have  a front sight hood.
