Looking for info about deer hunting in Tongass Nat. Forest. I would be hunting in the Petersburg area.

Don't know about the Petersburg area, I was on Prince of Wales Island and we had all the folks from Petersburg coming over to hunt deer.  If you are going to be hunting in September, plan on getting into the high country above timberline.  Yes, you will have to hump it.  Bring along a bunch of two gallon Ziplock bags, bone out the meat and pack it in the bags to pack out.  I always threw the meat in a creek or muskeg pond to cool off and wash it down before bagging it up.  I dragged a couple of deer out whole (well, after getting the guts out) and that was too much like work for this old boy!

Carry a deer call, "C'mere Deer" worked for me, although I had best results with surveyors flagging held between my cupped hands to squeal with.  Take your time, spend a lot of time just sitting and looking with binoculars.

Once the rut starts, walk slowly along the logging roads or get off into the brush.  Some folks have good results with rattling, it didn't do that well for me.

Good luck!
