Refinishing Ruger Single Six
« on: March 24, 2010, 12:29:51 PM »
My dad has a blue Ruger Single Six that is about 30 years old.  This was his carry gun around the farm.  It has seen a lot of action and looks really rough.  I am wanting to get it refinished, along with a new set of grips.  The factory rosewood grips are beat up as well.  I have a local shop that can do it, but I am not sure what finish and grips to go with.  There are so many choices.  Thoughts and opinions welcomed.

I'd suggest that you just restore it to like new.  I have a BH in 41 mag at ruger doing just that.  Costs about $200 for a complete factory reblue, any repairs and new grips.

That's what I was thinking as well.  I checked Ruger's website and they will reblue a handgun for $80 plus shipping.  I have a local gun shop that does excellent work, and I'd rather support local business.  Here's a PDF on their gunsmithing services.

There are more durable finishes such as Armaloy and black chrome that work well for a working gun. Blue is fine and factory is not a bad idea.. As to grips the rosewood quality of factory grips leaves a bit to be desired.. Custom grips can do better, for more money of course.. I'd have it orked by Hamilton Bowen. tTighten the tolerances and true it up a bit. The an armaloy type finish would be my choice(perhaps the hard black chrome) and stocks of kingwood or cocobolo.. Good luck on the project..

I just did my new model 9 inch in a parkerized finish.  I really like it.  I am contemplating giving it a cerra-coat matte black as well.  It looks so good now I'm not sure.
