Say hello to my little freind !
« on: March 24, 2010, 04:27:01 PM »
 ;D

I picked her up today . I havnt been casting but have been busy ! ...and I may never cast agian with the warming and all ? ::)

So I got a fellow caster to cast it for me .  8) He did a great job . Tomorrow I'll polish her up at MTs

This project was hush hush since getting the wooden positive posted in the pattern making thread .

The 'Grail' and I are the only ones who know how it was done ....... ;D I am very proud of this gun . It's #2 next to smee .

BTW 3 1838's , 2 Morkos , one green howie and one red mortar where dropped off at the casters .

I have no clue when I'll be pouring agian .

Spuddy The caster said 'thats it' any bigger and there is shrinkage . So that will proly be the biggest I make .

I hope you guys like it . It will be one entery in the 'postal match'

Gary

ETA to say the 1838 is proly the biggest .

Gary,

That's a cannon that you can be proud of, now you have to learn to use gravers and chase the details.....

Wowie!  She's a beaut!  You said you had something hush-hush coming, and I knew it would be nice, but this is really something else.  I agree you need to get the details chased, and the rest of her cleaned up, and get her on a diet - hollow out her tummy so you can stuff some BP down her gullet so we can see some smoke and fire pics!!! ;D

When I saw those dolphins executed flawlessly in wax, I had a vision of pre-cognitive brilliance, as I imagined the finished gun in my mind's eye.  In very few cases does the finished product reach this level of excellence.  Gary, as off beat and sometimes goofy as you can be, when it comes to artistry, you simply don't mess around!!  Wonderful.

this barrel is the most advanced pattern Ive seen with the achantus leafs and the dolphins are an outstanding creation of art, they are copied in the exact same shape as the original was

now you set the level gary , you will have great difficulties to match the next one to the same quality
this is an incredible piece of art

its nice to see it cast as I know how many hours and how much struggling it was with the decorations

Wow ! Thank you very much Dan !  :o

Good freinds are the only reason I've been able to do any of this . Dan , you and Mike and Tracy have been most generous with your time , instruction and the free roam of tools and equipment Thanks.

Gary

El Caz it is made from Everdur Bronze .I'm not sure how long or heavy .

What does it mean to chase the details?

Cannon of this type had the details enhanced with gravers and files to bring it to it's greatest form if you look
at the 17th and 18th Century cannon they are not just cast and polished there is intricate hand work that went into
finishing it, gravers would be used to sharpen up detail along the edge of  a line they could also be used to finshih
and define a sculpted element or add engraving.

I've got to say that that is beyond merely impressive, it's art!  May require a new catagory of Super Kewpie to do it justice.  Now how do we get on the "list" for the next one?

Now that's what I call a fancy barrel, its beautacious; splendid work, Gary!
Not long ago I called a few different foundries in order to get some information on their casting procedures, and they all said they were using Silicon (Everdur) Bronze because of its good casting qualities.
Why is there a parting line on the bronze, was this cast using the lost wax process?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Gary, I did lost wax casting with gold and silver for many years making jewelry, and that is a very nice casting!Your first clean-up pics show that you got great detail for something this size with that much metal. But, the casting is only as good as the wax carving and the investment. Those take up so much time and care to get just right, so you did a superb job! You should rightfully be proud of that one! Museum quality when it's finished! BoomLover

Here is todays progress

OK my vidio is worst than my stills . I forgot to turn off the darn camera ! After the shot thats really it .

She is all vented ,bored . Mike was a great help pionnering the process but now I have some tools to turn it with . Aluminum collars ,steady rest insert .

And it shoots good to  8). I could proly chase this thing for another year ....... I'm still working on it .

She's got a match finish bore for shooting in the postal match  ;D

I for one would rather see just a light clean up of that barrel, allowed to patinate and sitting on a weathered and slightly distressed carriage , to my eyes , would be gorgeous.  perfection lives in museums in glass cases , and in ' experts ' heads.

The kewpie means I like it...the only way it could get oak leaf clusters is to be in my collection, it's not!  :-[ So no oak leaf cluster.
