Opinions for 552 and 572.

 I'm interested in any opinions on the 552s and 572s. I've never fired either one, but I like the fit and feel. Every time so far that I read a posting from an owner, jamming for both models is always mentioned. Is this a problem for these models? I'd appreciate any feedback, thanks.

I've owned both and both were plaqued by jams. In fact the 552 was responsible for turning me into a hangun hunter.

On a squirrel hunt near a friends house way back in the Middle of the Talladega National Forums I was squirrel hunting with my 552 and had a High Standard .22 LR target pistol in a holster on my hip as I most always had a handgun with me.

After a lot of missing and jamming with the rifle I took it by the barrel and slung it as far as I could away from me into the woods. I then pulled the High Standard and went hunting. I got my limit that morning and became a handgun hunter primarily for many years after that.

The 552 and 572 are nice looking rifles so if you have a spot on the wall you wanna hang a nice looking rifle they should do fine for the job. Personally I don't think I'll ever have another for shooting use tho.

I have never had a 572. I do have an old 552 standard grade. I does not have a serial number on it, I bought it used back in the 60's. It was not pristine back then and I have added a few dings and scratches to it since. I have not shot it in several years, but I do not remember it jamming. It used to like the Remington solids, the ones with a "U" on the head, which they do not make any more. I have shot shorts in it with out jamming too. But like I said I have not shot it in many years and my memory may be a little fuzzy.

I had a 572 BDL for years.  Never had a jamming problem but it was never very accurate.  It was not even minute of squirrel head accurate.  Finally sent it on down the road even though it was a pretty gun and my first rifle.

I had the 572 never had a problem.  I'd heard of the jamming with the 552 all kinds of fix-it but  Rem is still selling them.

All this talk got me to thinking...I have not shot the 552 in a long time. Just for grins, I loaded up 15 and stepped out the back door and ripped them off. Not a single problem. Well, I guess I can now say that I have shot it recently with no jams or misfires.

I have a late 1970s vintage 552 BDL and it has been dead reliable.  I love the looks of the rifle, especially the sharf fin front site, like the old Rem 600s used to have. ;)

I got my 552 in 1969 and have never shot a finer 22 cal. hunting rifle. It has the fit and finish of a large cal. rifle and has been dead on accurate since day one. The only complaint I have on this rifle is the tube magazine. They are not my favorite, as I don't like unloading it after a walk in the woods. It's much easier just to drop a magazine and taking one out of the chamber and not having a pocket full of loose cartridges. However, I did solve this problem. I pick out a target and fire it until empty when I leave the woods. It works for me!!

My first semi 22 was a 552, man I put alot of rounds through that rifle. I never once had a problem with it except for one, being smaller framed I couldn't hold the rifle in the same points as a adult there for I had to hold my hand right directly under the bolt handle. (it's on the left side) The first tiem I took it out it cracked my thumb good, I learned to keep my thumb down after that. I have had friends and seen att he range many 597 and i think I've only seen one fire the whole time without a hitch. Another thing i've heard about them is they wear out the plastic magisines quite fast so if you have one get the metal magisines. If I was looking at getting a semi auto 22 only one comes to mind and thats a ruger 10/22. (this is coming from a hard core remington guy to)

  I bought a 552 new in the mid 70's, and to this day it's never jammed, not even one time.  What's really amazing is, it sits in my barn for pest control, and it's NEVER been cleaned, not even one time since i bought it.

  It looks like he!!, with the finish all cracked and weathered, but it's totally reliable, and i know when i pick it up it will go "bang" every time i pull the trigger.
