30-30 Handi?
« on: March 25, 2010, 03:49:35 AM »
I used to own one several years ago, but sold it. How come i never see one chambered in 30-30 in any of the gun shops around? Are they really that hard to find any more?Seems like H&R would sell lots of them if they would build some. ???

H&R builds calibers in batches.  I've had a .30-30 Handi on order since the last week of August, 2009.  I went in to my favorite gun shop yesterday and was informed that my .30-30 is on the truck from the distributor, due in early next week.

.30-30 Handi's are in the pipeline.  If you want one, tell your counter guy.

They are the quintessential single shot Handi-rifle..and in high demand. Most Handi's in 30-30 have always been very accurate..and the 30-30 is a well loved cartridge..Why they don't make more of them is anyones guess..

I'm surrounded by a herd of .30-30s......all leverguns.  Mine, my wife's, my kid's, my grandkid's.  We don't own a .30-30 Handi....I'd say it's time to fix that problem.

I started my search last summer for a 30-30 at walmart. They gave me a price of $249, but said depending on the availability it could take up to 6 months to get one. I then called Bass pro and Gander mountain, same story depends on availability. I did this thinking that the big boys would have more pull with the distributors due to quantity buying. Well to make a long story shot I finally called my local mom & pop shop told him what I wanted, He said okay I will keep looking. Two weeks later he called and told he had found 2 of them and ordered them both, they will be in in a week. one week later he called and told me they were in and that he would hold one for me and I could pick it up any time. Well the next day my new 30-30 came home with me for $5 less than what walmart quoted me. The point to my story is, if you really want one don't give up they can be had.

What you will find about the "discount stores" is that a lot of the time they are not cheaper.I don't go to many of those stores due to lack of service and I like to keep my money local. The only thing Walmart has going for it is convienence. The only thing I buy there is the Winchester 45 grain Varmit packs because that is the only place i have ever seen them.

I have 2 Handi's that are absolutely never going up for sale... My 32-20 from Larry Trotter and my 30-30.
As good as the 45-70's are I have bought, sold and traded 7 or 8 of them away. Not once have I even considered parting with the 30-30.

i agree....there aren't many around cuz once you get one you don't want to let it go. It's rimmed, moderate chamber pressure, perfect for a Handi rifle...my 2 cents

Naw, a fellow can't have enough .30-30s, if he's got grandkids around.  I've got two Win 94s, one sighted for cast bullets, one sighted for Remington green box 170 grain.  The grandkids will get them one of these days.

I picked up my .30-30 Handi yesterday.  NIB, out the door price was under $300.00.  SB-2 frame, Ilion roll mark.  New ones are in the supply chain, fellows!  Get 'em while they're hot!

Not in the Handi, but years ago in the '94 Win., one up the spout and one in the tube for a two shooter.
I never had a good long shot and yet with the open sights and young eyes I thought I was pretty bad medicine out to 150ish.

Spitzers are all I use.
I used 150 gr SIE Pro Hunter spitzer with Win 748 on two bucks last year, both went straight down at 75 yds.
Got load info from Reloader's Nest.

Used a 180 SIE Pro Hunter spitzer with H380 this year on two does, a coyote, and a bobcat.
Not real accurate. Will go back to the 150.

Tim,
That's a nice group. what powder?
I just developed a low recoil 30-06 load for the SIE 125 PH at ~ 2800 fps using IMR SR-4759, but it was not as tight as that.

Durn....that Tim, everytime I think I've got a good group to show off, he pre-empts me.  I'm shooting cast bullets and getting "pretty good" groups out of it.  I can't show off these puny one inchers now. ;D  Maybe I'll have to move up from my 4x scope.  Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway) the 30-30 will shoot with proper attention.  Mine is a Handi-gun II with the skinny barrel.

Thanks, H322 in 375Win brass loaded to a QuickLoad predicted 60kpsi which is the SAAMI spec for the 375Win.  ;) The Sierra #2120 bullet has a broad effective terminal velocity range, will work at 30-30 handgun velocities all the way up to .30 cal magnums.  ;D

The use of pointy bullets in the 30-30 is practical from a efficiency point of view, but slinging lead in this caliber just feels right..............  ;D

Thanks for the spitzer info and comments guys.

To answer the OP's question:

"How come I never see one (Handi) chambered in 30-30 in any of the gun shops around?"

The reason is people that have them like them so much they don't sell them. If a 30/30 barrel or rifle comes up for sale here they are snapped right up. They always seem to shoot well....<><....:)

zoner,
What brand of shotgun scope do you have on your Handi? I am in the process of purchasing three Handi`s for myself and my two sons in the 30-30 configuration.
How is your scope for fast target acquisition??
