Can't hit didly squat.
« on: March 25, 2010, 05:17:32 AM »
We're talking about my newest .357 shorty.  There are at least three very important variables.  The first is ME.....blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.  The second is the cheap red dot scope that's 4 or 5 MOA, and the third is the rifle itself......I do not feel this is the problem.

Now, none of you laugh, or I'm gonna come find ya.  I shot up enough ammo yesterday to retire most everyone that ever worked for Remington, Winchester, Federal, etc. etc.  I got real excited when one Maxi round touched the previous.  The next one went all the way over to the other side of the target.  I guess I'm tired and done.  It's MOD at 50 yards.....that's "Minute of Deer" for any sophmores hangin about out there.  No, it'll not be chewing up chucks at 300 yards.

We're still going to do a chrony between the shorty and the 22 incher.

Take two chronographs with you in case you hit the first one ;D  Try a different optic before you use your chronograph.  Thanks for helping the economy with the ammo purchases.  You have now been counted as an ammo tester to help improve the jobs numbers ;)  Keep your fingers crossed for our country!

Y'know, never thought about it like that.  I'm probably a real National asset, running around loose in a pair of old camo coveralls.  I just took them off, and I'm heading for Washington now.

Well, I kinda thought since we had the place pretty well stuffed with Horses Asses, I'd just let mine hang out for them to park it where they want it.

well said Pete!!....<><....:)

P.S. - check the crown and try a different sighting system, perhaps a low power scope just to verify the GUNS ability to put the bullets in the same place on the traget. Try shooting some inexpensive .38 specials out of it at 50 yards or so just to see if they group with a scope, and...HAVE FUN....<><....:)

Pete,

I vote for the red dot being the culprit.  Wife has one on her M-4 and it is Minute of Clay Pidgeon (4") @ 50 yds.  Pointed out to her that the big red dot doesn't help with accuracy and now I have to buy her a 3x9x40 AR scope.  I need to learn to be quite around her.

PS.  When you show up in DC, try and get a photo of you and Nancy P. to post.  I hear she digs the rugged outdoor type.

As unlikely as it may sound, many red dot sights have huge parallax problems.  Put the gun on the shooting bags and then move your head around and see if the dot appears to move around on the target.  Bet it does

How's the trigger? I know I'd shoot my Handi much better if it had the same trigger my Model 700 has, even if I can't see like I used to.

Nah, it ain't none of the above. It's the vibes. The vibes between Pete and the barrel are out of balance... their energies are off. No one's fault here, just the way the vibes clash sometimes.

Send the barrel to me, I've got great vibes and have been secretly developing my skills as a Handi-whisperer (gonna see if they'll make a movie about me) I'll show that rebellious little barrel how to get its vibes in order!  8)

Pete, a lot of what's been said sounds good.  Start with rail, mount a known scope, check lock-up and try different ammo.  If that don't work, PM me and we'll work somethin out.  DP

No, it's not the barrel.  It is definitely the red dot.  A scope is going on it this morning, and I'm sure it'll be fine.

O.K.  Just got done.  I have some issues with my .22-250, so since it had to come off anyhow, I stuck her 6-24x50 on the little rifle.  Bore sighted it, and punched bullet on top of bullet...one raggedy hole.  She's a sweetheart as all Handi .357s are.  Now, can I interest anyone in an almost new, slightly used, not too accurate red dot????

Pete  I know your pain ::) Just finished fitting a 12 ga 18.25 barrel on  an action. Drilled and tapped for a base so I stuck a ProPoint Tasco Red Dot on it for grins. 1 3" #6 load later and the front lens was floating around in the tube   :o Of course my shoulder said ouch as well!Called Tasco they said ship it to them with $10.00 for return shipping and they would determine if it was a warranty item if not they would mail a quote for repairs.I used this red dot for years on a very hot loaded T/C 357 for steel targets with no problem but it ain't heavy duty enough for the 12 ga . Think I will try a 1X shotgun scope next. Gald you got the little darlin going in the right direction . A pic with the Big scope would be nice, bet it looks cute with a scope almost as long as the barrel ;D

I still work with felons every day and they sure don't resemble you guys in ANY way!!!

Got to say that ain't so (yet).  My 357 Handi is spitting Minute of Target (when it finds the target).

Quickdtoo showed me some recommended Handi fixes in another thread and I made the largest to date, being sand the forearm off the receiver, and have not had an opportunity to reshoot.  I am hoping that the inaccuracy problems are resolved.

1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004, I can see Pete shooting a .357 Handi off the White House steps right now. Lots of vermin in DC. Pete stop in Bad Axe on your way through, I've got some 214 gr. handloads for the .357 you can use when you get there.
