favorite places to ride
« on: March 25, 2010, 07:21:43 AM »
Ok boys, time to brag up your favorite "putts". List the highways if possible, I've riding for a little over 15 years now and have covered a lot of ground out here in the west. I really can't put a finger as to my most favorite road, mainly because we have some serious seasonal changes out here. You don't want to be caught on top of Bear Tooth pass in October or anywhere in southern Utah in July or August!

So with that said I think my favorite spring time ride is the "lochsa" (locksaw) Hy. 12 out of Missoula Mt. down to Orofino Id. the caution road says "winding road next 77 miles". It is loaded with properly banked twistys and some wide sweepers, lots of game, deer, elk and every once in a while a grizzle bear. This is a fun run in both directions, just do it in the daylight!

A fun summer run is "the Bear Tooth Pass" Hy. 212 from Cooke City Mt. (northeast gate of Yellowstone Park) to Red Lodge Mt. The pass takes you up to 11000 ft elevation, lots of little alpine lakes, the only palce that I've ever looked DOWN and seen mountain goats!
You can also access "Chief Joseph senic Hy. 296" from the western base of Bear Tooth Pass, cool story about that route. (signs on the summit tell the story) From there drop down into Cody Wy. and check out Bill Codys firearm museum, give yourself 4 hr. minium.

Then there's always Glacier National Park up in northern Mt., Logan Pass (Going to the Sun Road) is a must see at least once in your life.

I rode the area around Red River NM last yr.and I'm going on north this yr. to the Durango Co.,Silverton,Teluride, and Grand Junction  area. I,ve heard that that area is among the best motorcyle roads in America, according to the motor cycle mags.   Digger

Easy. Blue Ridge Parkway from Cherokee NC to Front Royal Va. 422 miles IIRC. Best scenery around and some great roads too.

My favorite is Highway 14A from Spearfish to Cheyenne Crossing in South Dakota. Great restaurant at Cheyenne Crossing. It is also called Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway.

That's a nice ride also. Much nicer when it's not in the middle if Bike Week tho. Same with the Needles. Spearfish Canyon Resort is half-way between Spearfish and Cheyenne Crossing on 14A and a neat place to stay.........again, anytime other than bike week. There's a neat little walking path that follows the creek/river upstream and downstream from the resort there at Savoy. Great way to get away from the crowds and adjust your attitude.  Last time we were there I regretted not takin' the fishin' pole as the trout were stacked in many of the pools. Someday when we have more time.........

Anywhere off the interstate and out of major city's, chip and tar works for me,little gravel or what ever. I ride two lane, no lane all over this country and in all the years of riding (first bike at 9) I'm 50 never been without one and maybe been on a Interstate highway for 500 miles in total in all those years. I'm just going to say it's all good when your sliding and gliding, moving and gru'ven on a curving hilly road.

I grew up in S/W Colo and it's great riding but if you really want to see it YOU NEED TO PARK THAT STREET BIKE and rent a Endro bike and ride all the mine roads and Owl creek pass, up into Horse fly, many other points and you could spend a week riding the back roads easy That's one area you could bike yourself to DEATH! What you you see from the asphalt is great but nothing compared what you can see on Endro.

Anywhere I can. I guess my favorite is Old K-10 from Alma to Alta Vista, Kansas. Beautiful country, the Flint Hills, and lots of history. My moms side of the family is from Alma, and been there since like 1875 or something. It's great knowing all the places to stop to get the best water on earth coming right out of the ground.

The wife and I did our favorite ride this past week end. My solo ride is a BMW 1989 R100RS. She rides a BMW 1971 R75 dressed as a Euro police bike minus the lights. Friday with a late start we went 255 miles to Tellico Planes, TN. At the Cherohala Motorcycle camp ground we ment up with some friends. This is our first ride of the season and we will do the same ride in the fall each year. After dinner the group picks a place to ride to and meet the next day for lunch. On Sat. we all went to eat and gass up. Then it was 100 miles of curves to Helen Georgia. Great little German town with some very good eating. After eating and checking out the shops it was back to the camp ground for a cook out and some blue grass music (provided by the camp ground). If you stick to the back roads in that general area you can find some great riding. Many of the roades in the area rivel the  "Dragon" but are not advertised. You can now go on the Dragon from the east to the rock slide then turn around and go back. The entire area is our favorite ride. Sunday was a pleasent 255 miles of two lane to home. Two of the guys that were in our camp were new to the area and one had only been riding for a year. They both said they would be back for the fall run and wanted to bring there families up for the senery.

As a side note I am 67 and have been riding 53 years. My ride is built up with race suspention and I can hang with most of the younger guys with newer bikes. My wife is 56 and has been riding for 21 years. She will stay with most guys untill she runs out of suspension. The rest of the guys are from 30 to 45. We have been riding that area for about 7 years now. Generly two rides a year. Some of the guys ride up there more. I also hunt bear in the area in the fall and fish for trout a time or two a year.

If you get the chance to ride the area don't hold back.

Jumpsteady,
Have you rode the lower and upper McDowll (not sure of spelling) road that ends up by the river in Manhatten? K-4 between Alta Vista and Topeka.

I have done K-4 from Topeka to Alta Vista. I live in Topeka. My grandparents still live in Alma so I have done a little bit of riding between the two. Where are you from?

Jumpsteady,
I live in the country about 35 miles north of Wichita. A few years back I lived three years in Hays. Did not care for Hays but western Kansas surprised me with all the nice riding roads.

I've never ridden out that far, and I don't care for Hays either. Smells kinda crappy all of the time. I have never been more that 80 miles in any one direction from Topeka but I am still finding awesome roads to ride right here.
