mk3?
« on: March 25, 2010, 11:38:34 AM »
My mk3 is a stovepipe machine. I can't get three rounds out of it without it jamming.

It extracts the shell from the chamber okay but soesn't eject it.

Anyone else have this problem? Or know of a fix for it?

I did try cleaning it and oiling the bolt and no difference.

I would suggest cleaning your loaded chamber indicator. Or better yet remove the LCI all together. It's a very simple process. Many times the LCI gets clogged up with crud from shooting. The LCI gives just enough resistance to cause functioning problems. www.rimfirecentral.com is an excellent resource that has a ton of information on the MKIII pistols. I removed the magazine disconnect, Loaded chamber indicator, and added a volquartsen target sear. All very simple projects that i completed in about an hour total.

My MKIII runs 100% all the time with all brands of ammo tried. The LCI is a great improvement - I really like it. I clean my pistol every 500 rounds weather it needs it or not. I have had the LCI stick a couple times from being excessivly dirty or a rare powder particle jamming it up. But keep the LCI - it could save a life!

The cheap stuff. Winchester copper washed, thunderbolts. I know match ammo will probably function fine but I bought it for cheap plinking and would like to be able to shoot the cheap stuff.

I had a similar problem with one of mine.  I bought that pistol when they came out for the first time (the Govt. target slab sided 6 7/8) and it could group better than a ruger 77/22 rifle at 100 yds scoped and benched.
Any way, apparently while using a thick toothbrush to clean it internally, I may had pried open a little the fixed point that supposed to hit the spent cartridge as it is blowing back the bolt.  Well, mine started to get wedged on it and the gun will try to load the new round while the spent shell jammed "a la stove pipe" style.  It took me a long time to figure it out and even bought a brand new bolt from Ruger, thinking that the bolt had the problem somewhere.
Since I have three of those pistols, I decided to examine each one point at the time and compare.  I disassemble the gun and removed the bolt and look down the barrel to see the alignment of the pointy thing that kicks the spent shell off the gun's extractor.  The pistol with the problem was bearly showing the poit while the one that work fine it showed the pointy thing very clear.  That's when I noticed that that pointy thing is held together by a ribet and when I cleaned the gun with a thick brush, I had moved it enough so that the spent shell actually wedged itself in it.
I use another tooth brush being careful not to break the pointy fixed thing and incredibly, I could now see it down the barrel.  That pistol has not had a hickup ever since.

I, by no mean am a gunsmith; but that is the story of my situation that has similarities as your story.

Camba.

thanks for the replies guys.

Camba, calling it a "pointy thing" was my first clue you were not a gunsmith. ;D That was very funny.

Thanks also for the reply, I'll take a look at it.

Well not sure about the Winchester but neither my Rem 597 or my MkIII can abide that waxy cheap thunderbolt stuff!

CCI Minimags (RN full copper jacket) are what I feed my .22's as they go bang everytime with those but if there is a cheaper alternative I'd like to know about it...

I recently got an older 10" MK 2 and can make it stovepipe 3/10 times with the 'right' ammo.  It hates everything Remington except Yellow Jackets.  I have gone through 2 1/2l 333 packs of winchester, 1 bulk pack of Federal, PMC, CCI, Aguilla SSS, and many different Target types without a cycling glitch.  If you haven't tried some different types of ammo, that would be a good thing to do.  If I had gone to the range the 1st time with only Remington, someone else would have gotten that pistol very cheaply...

Well I took it apart and cleaned it thoroughly. Looking down the barrel, the ejector is showing as it should. The lci didn't seem to be clogged up at all but I would like to replace it anyway. I think I'll remove the mag disconnect also. I'll let you know either way if the mods helped or not.
