Grouse in Ga.

Heard on the radio and ad that said we would have grouse hunting in Ga. for the first time early in 2010.  I didn't even know what a grouse was.  I thought that was Sweet Thang at 5:00 am! :D

Now I got's to find where these grouses are and how one goes about hunting the critters! :'(

Grouse are fun.
The scare the crap out of you as they fly away.
I have hunted them in NY, Ohio, PA and Id.
We used shotguns in all the eastern states but used 22 pistols in ID.
Found shorter fast swinging guns work best.  I like 7.5 or 7's as shot size
and the Grouse will wait till you are ducking under a branch, climbing over a log or some other thing that has you way out of position to shoot till they fly out from under your feet wit hthe loud drumming beating of their wings.

Sorta' like quail then, just bigger.  Nothing gets your blood up like a large covey of quail coming up all around unexpectedly.

This is a good thing. We need more game to hunt around here. I'm just waiting for open season on politicians. ;D

I hunted grouse a couple of times back in the 70's up in the northern WMA's.  Never did see any as I rememeber...  :-\  With the decline in quail and areas to hunt them I've just about given up bird shooting... Haven't had a pointin dawg in decades...  :(

Here in Bama for as long as I can recall we have specifically been forbidden to shoot grouse as a non game species. I'm now 65 years old and have spent a lot of my life in the woods from the time I was four or five years old. I've never seen a grouse in this state or for that matter in any of the other souther states I've hunted.

Were they talking about released grouse?

Kind of like all these native pheasants we have in Alabama.
They live in boxes at the top of scissor lifts.
Or released quail; their first time to fly is usually their last.
Its kind of disneyworld hunting, but its one way to bring folks into hunting.

Rather shoot a crow, I hate crows.

I quite honestly don't know more.  Like Bill I have spent years in the woods and never seen a grouse.  I just heard on the radio there was to be a season starting here.

I saw my first grouse in an online encyclopedia the other night!!!! :D

The ones I've killed in Montana & Alaska have been the best eating gamebird I've ever eaten. Like you guys I grew up in the south and had never hunted grouse before moving west.  ;D Far better on the table than any bird I've ever eaten except perhaps my mothers fried chicken...........

Grouse at least Ruffed Grouse live at altitude so you may not see them in the woods unless you are in the mountains.
I need to grab a Bird book and see where they show Grouse in Al and Ga.

  pastorp has that right. Best game bird i ever ate. Hunted them a lot with my father when i was a kid. I don't recall him ever missing one that he shot at. Not me. We moved to an area in NY that had no grouse only pheasants. I did good on them. Dad couldn't hit one to save his life. :o.  As far as i am concerned grouse are better eating than pheasants.

There are grouse in the Southern Appalachian areas of NC, not far from GA.  I expect the border counties of GA are where your grouse reside.

During turkey season, you can hear them drumming.

Found the page on the Ga. regs.  The link follows.  I have also been doing some reading.  Most of the grouse are in the NW corner of Ga.  Apparently, with good dogs and a good day a group might flush 3 or 4 and kill one.  It does't appear we have an over abundance.  That may explain why I've never seen one. :D

Graybeard, your 65 and never saw a grouse? Now I know why the southerners come to Wisconsin for grouse. Boy in Tennessee told me he sees one grouse a year there. If you want grouse northern Wisconsin has lots of them. I kicked up a grouse the other day just walking out my cabin. :D.  Just watch our dogs, wolves love them.
