Marlin to close North Haven plant; 265 jobs going

NORTH HAVEN — Longtime gun manufacturer Marlin Firearms Co. will shut its doors in June 2011, leaving 265 people without jobs.

A phase-out of operations will begin in May, First Selectman Michael J. Freda said tonight.

“The situation appears to be compounded by the fact that Connecticut is a difficult state for any manufacturer to sustain its business model,” Freda said.

He added that wage differentials, the cost of doing business and other higher costs seem to be several of the driving factors connected to the closing.

Marlin officials couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The company started in New Haven in 1880 and was purchased by Frank Kenna and later moved to 100 Kenna Drive in North Haven.

The is the first I had heard of it in print. My gunstore had been saying since back before deer season that they were having trouble getting Marlins because they were in the process of getting moved to a Remington plant in the south. I thought they were full of it since I thought it surely would have made the news.

Not surprised. Most northeast liberal states are downright brutal on any kind of business. the bottom line is the company has to make a profit to exist. Liberals think profit is a dirty word.

My point is there are 265 employees at New Haven. If they average 10 years of service, that's 2650 years of firearms building experience. Most will not be transfered to the South. It's the same thing that happened to Remington. Sure, in 10 to 15 years the Southern plant will have the experience. In the meantime, it will be a crapshoot.

I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. CT is a tough place for MFG.
Cost of living Taxes etc.. just plain old too expensive to make a go of it
in CT. Made number 3 top taxed state per capita.

I may be wrong, (wait for it, here it comes) BUT i don't think Marlin
owned by Remington is just going out on the street in some town and
say hea you, you are now a gun builder. Al though most of the folks in the
south have a pretty good knowledge of weapons

Well, Rex, what else can they do? The South is not home to too many precision manufacturing people! They have no choice but to get someone off the street. The Northeast, on the other hand, has a work force that has been building firearms, machine tools, precision measuring tools, etc. for 200+ years. A Marlin lever action is actually completely machined. Unlike the barstock Remingtons! Yes, quality will suffer for a while.

The transplant auto companies settled in the south and developed an impressive manufacturing base near the factories. In fact my guess is that more precision work is done south of the Mason/Dixon line now than above.

Over 60% of the defense contracts of the U.S. Government are in Texas. That's in the south, and defense products are probably at least as high tech in the machining processes as building a damn rife. If some yankee don't want to buy a southern built rifle he can always take his "yankee ingenuity"

and build his own. If they had not elected so many liberals Marlin probably would not be moving in the first place. Seems they missed the boat in the state political arena too.

You're sadly mistaken my friend. More precision machine work down south than the rust belt ever had. Remingtons are machined and forged just like Marlins. Remington makes the finest firearms in the world and Marlin is one of them.

Heckler and Koch (sp) has a plant in Columbus, Ga. So does Pratt and Whitney. There are numerous hi-tech machining plants just in this area alone.

Hmm; this is all very interesting.

At the time of the Civil War, wasn't most industry located in the North to manufacture the arms and equipment for the war effort? and the South was stifled for lack of it? Now, from what's being told here is the industries are running to the South.

Latest Update: At 2:40 PM, EDT, I talked with a spokesperson from Freedom Group, which owns Marlin, and the news is better than first reported. The company is not, I say again, not, going out of business. The North Haven plant will be closed, but Marlin Firearms will be moved to a new location and will continue. Where, exactly, I don't know. Also, I wish to eat crow publicly for assuming the general news media did a story on guns and got the facts right. I of all people should have known better.

I am sad to see an end to a era of fine firearms built where they were for so long, and to see people be put out of work. I hope they offer the positions to the people who helped build the reputation of Marlin as well as offer some new jobs for people in the area they move to. DP

These plants are if nothing else historic , its a move that will end Marlin.
Damn it , we are on a down ward spiral.
Sad indeed.
