can anyone recommend a new .22
« on: March 25, 2010, 03:27:18 PM »
Looking for a new .22 rifle for informal target shooting/hunting. I have a ruger 10/22 but it feels like I'm shooting a kids gun,it's just too small.Only interested in semi-auto. What's everyone got that they like and would recommend?

Browning made a 22 semi-auto rifle called the 22 BAR (NOT to be confused with the 22 take-down rifle)  Its a full size gun with the classic "hump back" style with great bluing and french walnut stock.  I think they only made them in the 70's and 80's.  Mine was accurate and reliable.  The Weatherby 22 semi from the 70's and 80's is also nice.  Both available if you look on Gunbroker.

A new production .22 RF semi?  How about the new Colt M4 .22 rifle?  S&W and SIG also make similar quality rimfire versions of popular military rifles.

Marlin makes some of the finest 22's for the money, and their bolt action tube fed 22 gives you the feel of a full size high power rifle until you pull the trigger.

I like Ruger 77/22 bolt guns, they certainly are an adults gun and can be tweeked.  I also read a review from Gunblast about the new Accusport 10/22 that comes in blue, matt stailess and polished...that's also an adults gun.

To fit the bill of a new semi auto .22 rifle that doesn't feel like a kids rifle............
That would probably be the $500, 5 3/4 pound , 40" long , 21" bbl, ~Remington Model 552 BDL DLX Speedmaster Autoloading Rifle.
Other than that, what you have is very popular.

p.s.  Another full size .22 is  Savage,  who makes the 21 inch barrel Model 64G (wood stock) 64F (synthetic stock) 10 rd mag for $150 avg.   I'm not recommending either of these rifle, just listing them for you.

if you can handle the cost, a 63 winchester. really never has been any 22 semiauto made in this country that can hold a candle to one, as it came out of the box from new haven.i just ran onto one that i am trying to buy. the owner is proud of it,but new in box, that is unfired, i will be once i get it.

I bought a Rem 597 because it felt like an "adult" gun, and it fit me well. I like mine a lot. I'm on the larger side. She's a bit finicky on ammo, I run CCI thru mine pretty much exclusively with zero issues.  I'm sure there are others that work, haven't tried 'em yet... It's quite an accurate rifle.

BUT, doesn't Hogue or Ramline or somebody make a full-size stock for the 10/22? Cheaper than a new gun...

Since it has to be a Semi Auto. that does not feel like a kids Gun.

Take your 10/22 and add a Hogue over sized stock,
Then remove the barrel and replace it with one of the many heavy barreled target ones.
They even make some light weight heavy barreled ones.
Now change the sights to either a scope or splurge and get some really high end target sights like the ones on an Anshultz target rifle.

So now same cool little auto. fill size stock, heavy rifle that feels like a larger bore gun will be accurate, and will be chaep to shoot while still taking the ruger mags.
After all the 10/22, the Remington 870, 1100, the Colt 1911, and the AR 15 are like lego sets for adults.
What it looks like on the box and add a few parts from other sets and Presto that Biplane is now a Jet.

I'll vote for the 10/22 Target model or your own tricked out version.  That's what I have.  I am also looking at a Buckmark, rifle not pistol.  T/C makes a very good semi-auto as well.  I had one but I prefer to hunt with subsonic hollow points and the T/Cs, mine included, seem to like the high speed stuff.  Mine was very accurate with Remingnton Goldens and had a good trigger right out of the box.

Ruger 10-22 Target. Or better yet get a kit and conver yours.

Using your 10/22 reciver to build a new heavy barrel target gun can be a fun, and expensive adventure. Guys on the rimfirecentral website get their custom 10/22 Rugers to shoot really tight groups. For a nice bolt gun check out the CZ 452 American.
Act the way you would like to be, and soon you will be the way you act.

Ruger 10-22 Target. Or better yet get a kit and conver yours.

Sure: $200 for rifle, $100-250 for stock, $150-250 for barrel, $200 for decent trigger group, $50-100 for rings and base, $100-300 for scope.
Low price:  $800
High price: $1,300

But, replacing the stock on you 10/22 would make a big difference.

Replace the factory stock with a full sized stock (wood or synthetic) and you will be amazed at the difference in the fit and feel. You may also build a target rifle by replacing the stock with a bull barrel stock and then adding a new barrel. The target barrels are really heavy though.

Well on my 10-22 I already had the scope and mount. I paid about 100 bucks eaxch for the A&B barrel and a laminated stock. So I guess I ended up putting about 200 bucks into a 10i22 I already had. I must be a little better shopper than ya'll.
