Just guessing, but maybe President Obama likes British cannons, just thinking about Capt. James Cook and the Hawaiian Islands.

That would certainly fit into his past.  Perhaps something from the Pacific rim?

I doubt he would have any liking for British cannon as for the most part they represent colonial empire building

and the subjugation of a continent or two..... remember his gift to the Queen of England? Did he bow to her?...... No?
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Well, it's no secret that i like History, Guns, Cannons and Mortars, Etc. The only way i'll know for sure if President Obama has a favorite cannon or mortar is like i wrote before, about e-mailing the White House. This is still a contest, so Y'ALL can keep on guessing.

I would rather like to know what George Bush (41 or 43) would consider or even what Carter with his Navy history would be.

How about a real artillerist President like Truman?

WOW.  I didn't know that he was an FO and a B.C. in WWI!  Saw him once when he came to speak at Grinnell College (I was just a kid bicyling by when he stepped outside for a smoke.)

How many of our other presidents had artillary experience?

Well, it's a known fact George Washington liked cannons and mortars. Maybe we can build a list of Presidents that really like cannons and mortars?  I just wonder if there is some historic cannon or mortar, could be in a park or museum, that President Obama likes?

Maybe an Irish cannon?

"Ancestry.com had established that Obama was part Irish, and that his third great-grandfather on his mother's side, Fulmoth Kearney, is his most recent connection to the Emerald Isle. "

When i started this contest, i wrote that i would let it run a few weeks. Due to lack of interest, i'll probably cut it down to a week and a half.

I will admit that I named my big mortar after a former boss - because of her being the most feared/hated person in the organization.   ;D :o

I went searching to find some quote or remark that U.S. Grant might have made about the importance of artillery used in the Civil War, and was surprised to find that I couldn't turn up anything. His friend Gen. William T. Sherman is known for the famous quote: "A battery of field artillery is worth a thousand muskets."
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Grant was well known for his thinking that you could have too much of a good thing, like artillery.  He send a couple hundred back from the front in Virginia as being surplus to any reasonable need.

Tim, i didn't know you named your mortars.

What makes Y'ALL think President Obama might pick a Yankee cannon?

Y'ALL can bet i won't be e-mailing the White House for any answers on Aprils Fools Day.

...

Just the 4.5" - named H.H. - the initials of the 5 letter woman who was my boss. At least 5 professors quit rather than work for her.  Hence, it was the most fearsome name I could come up with for my biggest mortar.

I reckon i'll e-mail the White House sometime next week, seeing how it's Easter weekend, nobody might be around to answer.
Just thinking, President Obama might tell me that he likes a certain cannon and mortar, but he don't want me to tell you folks.
If that happens, i'll break it easy to you folks.

Someone will read the letter.  Someone may write a response.

Word it carefully enough and you might get a Christmas card from the White House in six months.

Well, dog gone, i didn't know this topic would cause such a fuss. The moderator sent me a secret message a few days ago, telling me he would hate to shut this topic down. Now i see someone's comment had to be deleted by the moderator. I will e-mail the White House next week, will anybody care to know the answer i get?

Lance,

I would suggest you reconsider emailing the White House.  Given the current political climate and the number of threats being communicated to government officials across the nation, it would be very easy to misconstrue the harmless intent of your message.  I think if you do send an email you will find yourself under unwanted scrutiny.

The choice of course is yours, but  if you do email the White House, I would appreciate it if you make no reference to this board or forum.  I'm sure Secret Service data miners have already  picked up on this public discussion, that's afar as I want this to go.

This topic is only marginally relevant on this board and very narrow margin at that.   As long as it stays cannon focused and doesn't focus on the man, I'll let it remain.
