Stevens 200 Qs
« on: March 25, 2010, 10:13:37 PM »
Got Quoted a New Stevens 200 in .223 for $336.00.  Im kinda nervous because the last three rifles I have bought were POSs.   My first Q is can you get a One piece scope base for it?  Also can you get a Single shot insert for it?  What would you recomend?   Im going to be shooting Factory ammo in it and was wondering how well does the 200 handle 40-50gn V-Max?   The last three rifles I had was a Rem 700 in .223 New! could not get the thing to shoot for Sh!!.   Next was a Rem. Mod. 5 in .22 Mag sent it back 4 times and sold it.   The last was a Nef(I own a couple and good shooters) in .22-250 Wont even go into that!    Reading about your guys luck sounds encouraging on the 200.
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.      Thanks Jeff  :)

You can get a one piece base for it. You can get a single shot tray for it. I have 3 Stevens 200's, but none of them have the original barrels on them, so I can't comment of how well they will handle the v-max bullets. I do know it will come with a 1-9" twist so it should handle the v-max bullets. My 223 does, but it has a 26" Shilen barrel with 1-14" twist rate and short throat I had made specifically for the 40 grain v-max.

Here is a link to a place that sells lots of Savage/Stevens parts

I posted this earlier to basically the same question. My Stevens 200 .223 shoots .6" -.7" groups with my handloads using 40 gr. Sierra HPs. Don't know why it wouldn't do the same with the v-maxes. My oldest grandson popped a coyote at about 160 yards last Sunday morning with it. One shot-DRT. You can put a good trigger on the rifle by making a new trigger return spring from smaller diameter music wire which is the only modification I have made to the rifle except to paint that ugly gray stock. No need to stone the trigger and some say you will ruin it if you do as the parts are case hardened.

Mine loves my handloaded 50 gr Vmaxes, loaded over surplus (old) BL-C2, and Rem 7 1/2 primers:

The only thing I've done to mine is to stone the burrs off the trigger edges. I did not remove enough to change any of the angles, and I backed the spring tension off a little bit. Other than that, it's factory stock, at about 4 pounds.

I will say I didn't have much luck with the factory ammo I tried in it. I only tried Black Hills and Ultramax. Mine didn't like either of those brands.

It wrecks havoc on the local varmints though...

 Thanks Guys!
Im glad I waited on ordering, found it at Dicks $299.99 still have to order though.   I checked the site above and boy are they proud of their One Piece Scope block(Pricey).   So what brands of two piece blocks fit the 200?  I looked and none said Stevens, are they under Savage what Mod?
Thinkin about puttin a Bushnell 4x12x40AO on it.   Most shots will prob. be under 150yds.   Any othere Tips?   Hope it likes the lite stuff!
                                                                        Thanks Jeff   :)

Thanks Jeff   :)

I"ve had a Bushnell Sportsman 4X12X40 AO purchased form Wal Mart for several years.   Its been mounted on a Handi rifle .223.  I also have a couple Banners in the same magnification.  Each one is mounted on a Stevens 200. One in .25-06, the other a .243.  No problems with any of them.

The Savage scope bases will work. You need a short action (if it's one piece) for a round rear receiver Savage. They are the same mounts.
