So Tired of the Crap
« on: March 26, 2010, 11:15:20 AM »
I love Remington products.  That includes Marlin & H&R.  I buy new ones and examine many of them on the shelf.  The quality is very very high and it always has been.  The Model 700 is the best centerfire boltgun made and the 870 cannot be beat at any price.  I'm glad Remington bought up a bunch of companies and I wish they'd move them all down south.  We like jobs, do good work, and only ask for a fair wage.

There are no (and never have been) any quality issues.  I'll keep buying Remington, Marlins, and H&R products because they have no equals.

Read this morning that the Marlin division will unfortunately be terminated by next year.

That's not true, the New Haven Plant is closing, production will be relocated.

Marlin Firearms to close next year

(AP) – 7 hours ago

NORTH HAVEN, Conn. — Marlin Firearms Co., a 140-year-old company which made a gun that was a favorite of Annie Oakley, is closing its Connecticut plant, company officials said Friday.

Workers at the plant in North Haven say they've been told all 265 employees will lose their jobs.

Jessica Kallam, a spokeswoman with Madison, N.C.'s Remington Arms Co. Inc., which owns Marlin, said the Connecticut plant will close by June 2011 and employees would be offered severance and help finding jobs. She said Marlin is relocating its manufacturing operations to an undetermined site.

Kallam could not confirm if all employees in Connecticut are losing their jobs.

She read a company statement that says Freedom Group, which owns Remington, must reduce its costs to remain competitive.

"Although long term prospects of the business look positive, economic factors beyond Freedom Group's control related to increasing costs and pricing pressures within the firearms industry are impacting the entire Freedom Group of companies," the statement said.

Remington Arms bought Marlin for nearly $42 million in 2007.

Marlin's Web site says John Marlin opened the company in 1870 in New Haven after having worked at the Colt plant in Hartford during the Civil War. The company says its lever action 22 repeater was a favorite gun of Annie Oakley.

Thanks for setting me straight. Glad to hear that the product line will remain available, but feel for the employees as I've been in the same boat before.

Well I feel sorry for the employees as well. But you wonder how many of said employees supported politicians that made the state so hostile to business in their state, and in the long term signed their own death warrant for employment.

;D :D  Swampman, I agree almost one hundred percent...Rem. is my favorite rifle company and the 870 is outstanding...my favorite modern shotgun, have a several Marlin rifles....but the only H & R I own is a single barrel my grand father sawed a couple inches off the barrel to shoot cottontails in the swamp...I shoot it once in a while...otherwise, have had little exp. with H & R but it is a well made old single barrel..the only one that has tempted me ever is the H & R single barrel trap gun.... but $300 bucks for a single barrel is a bit much for me.....pretty gun though...

I agree with the Remington being a great gun.  If I want to shoot nice small groups, I always grab one of my Remingtons.  Seems like jobs are needed everywhere though.  Almost all of the factories that once existed here are gone.  All moved overseas so the bigwigs and shareholders can make bigger profit.  If your company already makes profit in the hundreds of millions of dollars why move overseas and destroy our ecomomy for more profit?  Last time I checked you can't run an economy on the service industry and everything else is going away.

No reason they can't move manufacturing down south and dump the unions.  We need jobs here too.

Interesting thread.  Let me see I own:

3 Marlin lever guns
3 Remington rifles
2 H&R/NEF Rifles
2 NEF shotguns
2 Mossberg shotguns
1 Winchester shotgun

All are well used by me, and are quality firearms regardless of what part of this country they are made in.  They are American made, and I am proud to hunt and shoot each and every one of them.

Malin operations are supposedly being moved to the Rem Ilion facility.  Also at the BBB shoot each spring there has been a bounty up for grabs of $100 this year and I believe last also for anyone that wins the factory class with a Remington, the bounty before was $50. Nobody has claimed it in the past three years I believe since Savage keeps winning the factory class along with Ruger.
Good Shooting,
George

I'd rather give up shooting than shoot a Savage.

:o Swampman you amazing...I love Remington bolts, Marlin levers, have a couple Winchesters, they are ok, no new Savages....but for hunting whitetails in the brush, either my 99 .300 Sav. or 99 358 has more appeal than my bolt 700 in 7mm08...these are classic rifles...but why waste my time....

The 99 is too heavy and unattractive to appeal.

Some guys would rather push their Ford than ride in a Chevy
even if you gave them a low milage 63 Corvette convertible. ;)
There is a cool factory that is not always associated with the name.  the 99's are one of those, same goes with the  Winchester 94, Ruger No 3, and the Remington Model 8 or 81.  Just a classy brush rifle.
I used to be the same way only a little opposite.  I would do anything not to shoot an 870 as everyone had one and one of my friends would give me crap that the 870 was the king of the pumps and I should toss my Win 1897 riot model for an 870 Police Mag.  but now I own one and an 1100 too.
Have two Remington 700's and have owned a couple more.  Also own Winchester, Sako, Ruger, Mauser,  S&W, Benelli, and a couple that are not comming to me right now.  But for what I want them for they are great guns.
Have Marlins and H&R, but they are really not a Remington yet.  once they move the plant and change some things then they will be Remingtons.
You know like how Jeeps for the first couple years were still Jeeps, once the MoPar keys and locks started showing up and some other Mo Par parts were added then they are Chrystler / Jeeps and later when Chrystler was purchased by Daimler the newer models all had German influance.
I have to agree with Swampman that the Savage 110's are rather ugly.  Kind of like orthapedic shoes.  But like Orthapedic shoes they work and my you straiten out.  I think the same thing about the Glock pistols and the Marlin Bolt guns (I own 3 of them).

The two most inaccurate guns I've owned was a Savage 99 in .308 and a Ruger 10-22. The most accurate is a Rem. 700BDL in .17Rem. It can shoot the primer out of a 12ga. hull at 100yds. My godsons .204 Savage can't keep up!

Some of this discussion makes me glad I was born open minded and capable of evaluating a product by its strong and weak features and not be blinded by a brand name of any kind.

I'll bet plenty of folks that made those junk Savages also made those Remingtons.  Those factories are not that far apart.

I've been shooting nearly 50 years.  Savage has no strong features. It's a cheap department stroe gun for those who can't afford a quality firearm. As I stated in my first post.  Remington makes the best selling, best looking, and most accurate production bolt action centerfire rifle in the world.  The 870 shotgun has no rival or even close second.  Marlin, H&R, and Bushmaster are the tops in their class.  There are no quality problems and there never have been.

I to like Remington BUT I have had Remington guns with problems . Example - XP-100 holes for sights drilled off center on a new gun TWICE . seems it was a common problem.

I have an 870 bbl that the loop is so off it is hard to get it on and off the mag. tube . Had another the threads for the screw in chokes were so rough you could not switch tubes , only the one that came in it would work until it had the threads chased .

I don't care what name is on the side of a gun... if it hits what I'm aiming at it's a good one.
My Dad's Savage 99 was made in 1924... I don't even think they had department stores then did they? That rifle is a great shooter and I wouldn't trade it for a truckload of new Remingtons.

My S&W 3000 is a better made 870 with a larger stock.  The think I really dislike about the 870 is the girly grip it is thin and small and I am not a big guy.
I will pit my plastic Benelli Nova up against the 870 any and every day.  That thing is a shooter.  My 1897 is a faster action than the 870 and the reason I am now shooting  a modified 870 (changed the girly stock for a different one) is it is slower and I don't dump off all my ammo before the steel falls.  With the 97 I was shooting 2 or three rounds at a steel in the same time it takes me to do one with the 870.
The Nova is as fast as the 1897 and the felt recoil is less.
I will put my Armalite up against any Bushmaster any day of the week.  the factory comp is fantastic.

Not interested in plastic guns.  Guns no longer made, are no longer made for good reason.  The 1897 is a very poor design and I've never seen one that was reliable.
