Remington 1100s are junk.  I took my new used 1100 out the other day to shoot for the first time, and it wouldn't feed properly, shells shot out of the loading port for no reason at all, and when I pulled the trigger, it wouldn't fire the shell.

I wonder what's wrong with it?

The old 20 ga 1100 was considered the most reliable Auto shotgun made . Must be the streamed line assy line ?

So anyways, here's the rest of the story.  After my failed shooting episode, I came home & using a cleaning rod, I poked the last shell out of the chamber that wouldn't eject manually.

What I learned from all this is that no matter how you hold your mouth, 16 ga. shells don't work in a 12 ga..     Well, they LOOKED like 12 ga....they were red.......It's hard to see the print on the brass head...

Shootall, what I want to know now, is:  Will this kind of thing happen more or less frequently when I'm your age?

when I was younger and hurried more i shot an IDPA match with 9mm and 40 S&W mixed in a glock 23 . The shots were close and the 9mm's functioned in the gun although reloading them was not going to happen. Also when younger i shot several 16 ga. shells in a 12 ga. 870 and a couple 20 ga. in a 16ga . mod 12 to see what would work.
With age one is suppose to get wiser so i don't plan on doing either again . I got some little skiters for the shotgun  ;D
BTW how old am I ?

I would conclude from the number of posts you made, compared to me, that you are precisely 847 years old.  That will be three dollars.

It will be much more expensive if you want me to guess your weight.

It's all your fault.  I was afraid I would inadvertantly offend you because I'm so far right.

847 years is what I guesed, & I'm sticking with it.

I'm going out to test the 1100 again, this time with 12 ga shells.

I've never been able to get a 1100 to run.  I've seen my buddy nearly in tears trying to get his to operate.

Well, I just shot my "not new" 1100.  It werks goood with 12 ga. ammo; way better'n 16 ga. ammo.

Din't have to replace the discombooberatoraleous or nuthin.

I've never shot an 1100 well, either;  nor Brownings, Rugers, Benellis, Berettas, or Winchesters, for that matter.  Or any other shotgun.

I bought the 1100 because it has AA+ wood and it was, well, "affordable".  I don't expect to "shoot it well".  I did get 3 for 3 dragonflies, though.

Gee Guys,  after reading about your 870s and 1100s, think I'll stay with my old 20 ga Remington Sportsman A, the Browning square back design.  Can't remember ever having a problem with it.

Once I bought Dunlop tires and put them on my truck.  I came out one day, and found that one of them had gone flat!!  They don't stay round.  They are total garbage.  Now I buy only Good Year... ::) ::) ::)

That about sums it up..

I too like my Remingtons and have a safe full of them. I how ever am not so close minded to not own other brands like Ruger, and Winchester.
I am glad I don't own one of those Spartin shot guns or a 710 or 711 rifle. I really am getting tired of hearing all the complaints at the gun club about that bunch of junk.

Next time they are moaning ask them if someone put a gun to their heads and forced them to buy it?  ;)

Lets face it they were after a good quality gun and bargin basement prices and are now suprised when they didn't get what they were hoping for.

I actually feel quite bad for Remingtons situation as they are trying to satisfy the markets wishes and simply failing. The market is wanting good quality at crap cheapest prices ................... so really what do they expect. Remington should stand up and say we cannot produce the quality you asking for at that price. If you want the quality your going to have pay a reasonable price for just as your fathers did.

;) Brit, you are quite right.....I have thought a long time about this...most American's who hunt are down right cheap...they want a cheap gun, cheap shells, and top quality...you know the answer to that one...on the other hand people who are hunters don't mind having to pay a bit for quality.....I am not an 1100 fan as they seem heavy, and difficult to carry...have owned a couple, but never kept them, but never had trouble with them either....my pick has always been a pump...

WCH , when hunting Canada  seldom saw a nice gun . Even less good shells . Shells that I saw that were made in Canada were junk. The clerks in stores told us not to buy them . Also the stores had junk for knives  and other gear . Its not just in America. To many its being cost effective . I have never shot a bird with my Super X-3 or 870 that was upset it wasn't one of my O/U's .
I think the complaints are the degraded quality we get today vs 15 years or more  ago . Don'tr look for it to stop .

Well being a used gun fanatic, Many I pick up have been taken down and cleaned and parts are either missing, damaged or impropperly assembled.
Get a shop manual for the gun.  Tear it down and look at the parts, order new O rings if needed and re assemble it according to the manual.
My guess is that it will fix it.
I bought a Browning B2000 not too long ago and took it from the shot to the range.  It did not work.  Who ever reassemled it put the gas block in upside down and the holes did not match up and did not work.  Quick flip of the book, 2 hours fo scrubbing, lubing and reassembly and it works well.
Give it a try.  OH I only look at used guns that are in my books to buy.
Good luck.
Then again having worked in manufacturing for a number of years factories do produce about 2% screw ups.

Hmmm decent QC should catch most if not all factory screw ups but then again that costs money so..................................  ::)

Now I should address this:-

Quote
I am glad I don't own one of those Spartin shot guns

My first ever shotgun was a plain Baikal 12B SxS with 28" barrels 1/2 and full choke and double triggers and NO ejectors. Brought it mail order from my mates Mum's Kays catalogue. It was bit stiff to open at first but a little use and it loosened up a bit butt hat was it it never seemed to get any looser after that. I think it was some preservatice grease for shipping in the knuckle. I brought a plain Parker-Hale cleaning kit in a carboard box which i still have and still use  ;D sadly I let a work mate talk me into selling him the SxS  ::)  :'( something i regret. it was a plain workign gun but it was relaible.
I now have a Baikal Mdl 27 O/U with SST and ejectors but again fixed chokes and again it's a 12b and I won't be partign with it. I brought it used and every now and then it was a right begger to open. A trip to the gunshop that had a proepr shotgn smith and it was fixed at the cost of £25 (about $40 US at the time) the enertia block had come slightly lose and when the gun reached a certain angle it moved under recoil and blocked the lever's cam. I was shootign Canadas and Greylag geese at the time.

Baikal made the Spartans for Remington but somehow I think Remington cut the costs to the bone hence the dreadful problems we see reported.

As for the 1100 beign heavy? ........................... hmm  I have shot them many years ago but never owned one. Did not find them particularly heavy same goes for teh Winchester 1400 a friend had the impression was that they were very long. In fact it was only the other year I finally scratched a certain itch and acquired my first semi Auto shotgun. It's a mid 50's FN Browning Auto five and yep it's heavy  ::) compared to my Baikal it feels like a club  :( I did expect it to be different especially to a fine SxS so I don't compare it to the Cogswell & Harrison and the one I have is a basic model 30" barrels fixed chokes DTNE with virtually no engraving. It's the sort a junior Civil Servant would have brought when heading off to his post in the Empire between the word wars or even pre WW1.

Believe it or not most companies have a % of the price in field fixes.
I used to argue with the QC guys at my old company and ask why not use 1/2 or a 1/4 of the money set aside for field repairs as bonuses for the guys on the line not to make a screwed up part.  I do not know how or what they did to get a header to pass pressure testing and get stamped but the openings were oval and would not seal in the field.  it cost thousands of $ to have service crews replace the headers and ship new ones all over the country.
That could have been caught early by the guys on the line.  Oh well.

:( Shootall, you are quite right about Canada...When I hunted there last, they told me the Gov.t taxes very heavily anything made out of the country and imported IF THE CANADIANS MAKE THAT ITEM... It seems there was a cheap firearm made in Canada somewhere so all firearms were heavily taxed...ammo too. I think they told me Rem. and Sako's cost the same after taxes, and in those days in the early 90's they set the Canadian back a $1000. Now this is what I was told, so only have that to go on....

Back to the 1100 discussion.  I've had one for decades.  I think it was new in 1973.  It's a 3" magnum.  I have dumped it out of a boat, used it to paddle a boat, and drug it all over the woods in general.  It has been a great gun.  I have three barrels for it.  One day I decided to put a 2 3/4 imp cylinder barrel on it and use it dove hunting.  Figured the extra weight and recoil pad would be nice.  The gun worked for a shot or two and quit cycling.  I could not find the problem so I took it to work and a friend took the stock off and examined the spring.  There is a little H-shaped piece that the rod ends rest on that had become bent.  The rods were not staying in their place.  We took the H-shped piece to the shop, held it in a pair of vice grips, put it on top of an anvil and hit it sharply with a 2 lb hammer.  It squared right up.  The shotgun has never failed again (since the early 80's).  Have no idea why the H-shaped piece got bent using a field load, but I guess stuff happens.

If your 1100 is not chambering correctly when fired, check the piece that the rods ride in that is inside the stock.

Somebody here should know the correct name of the part.

WCH, to be honest after the exchange rate Winchester and Remington shells were less expensive in Canada than across the border in Cabela's in Grand Fork . The shot guns we looked at mostly 870 amd 500's were in the 450 -650 range . They seem to like the roit gun look as many had hand guards etc.

SHOOTALL ,WCH . who tells you this crap there is no tax on US product like guns or ammo as per the free trade agreement any extra cost other then exchange could be the the GST/PST much like a state sales tax ,or the cost of paper work getting things across the US boarder  As far as Canadian junk shells can you name some so I can stay away from them And nice guns man SHOOTALL where in Canada are you hunting my safe only holds Rem. 700's no 710.770 and for sure no combo Savages.

Best Alan  ; PS guys the higher cost up here is retailers screwing you and me or the cost of conforming to US law that's what the US mail order places tell me when they charge extra to process a order to Canada

pacer97 , no one told me anything and I never mentioned tax . But since you did in the states we pay a pittman Roberson tax on sporting goods ( did you realize that ? ) . I buy shells in Canada at a sporting goods store ( can't remember the name ) in Winnipeg or at Canidian Tire in Selkirk. The shells name i don't remember off hand , if i have one at home I will look

SHOOTALL I'm sorry you did not mention tax WCH did and I should have pointed that out. But there is not tax on guns to protect any Canadian built gun the only mass made gun made here I know of is the Savage rim fires. As to Canadian juke shells I don't know of any ammo made here so if you know of a brand do let us know so I can stay way from it. And SHOOALL you being able to by shells in Canada cheaper I can see that when our dollar is in the tank but when the dollar is close to par I have no idea why hell I have no idea why IMR powder made here is $18.00/ lb. on your side of the border and in Alberta here $34.00 and that was when our dollar was 99....cents against the USD.

I want to say the shells were champion brand . We could get shelld for less at Canidian Tire in Canada than Cabela's just over the line in the USA . then Canada money was .66 of US . Or the $50.00 fire arms fee was a little over $30.00 US

Swampman +1 the 1100 Remington should have put it out of its misery.

SHOOTALL thanks ,I have used Federal Champion 22LR. but have to say never have seen just the Champion brand. And I do think the .66 cent dollar is gone for some now oil is going to keep the CND up hope we get to see some of good US deals soon.

Now got to get back to the Remington naysayers.......I think if you sell as may guns as the big R your never going to please all, all the time. I hope for them to build the best they can like the 700 so if I need to improve it I have a top notch gun to start from. And I do think they should dump the 770 line and the other crap in there line up. Just build good firearms at a fare price. If it needs tuning or a barrel I have Ron K Smith down the road here one of the few gun smiths that build barrels and dam good ones to.
