Forbes list is out - States that tax the most
« on: March 26, 2010, 11:17:40 AM »
The Forbes annual list of states that tax their citizens the most is out!
And California ranks ... well, California isn't even on the top 10 list. (I was a bit surprised)
California came in 12.

Forbes: Where Americans Are Taxed Most:
10. Pennsylvania
9. Wyoming
8. Washington
7. Massachusetts
6. New York
5. New Jersey
4. Minnesota
3. Connecticut
2. Hawaii

Drum roll ....--- And the winner is ...

1. Vermont

I guess the 4.5 illion Illegals that are here and Pay no  in come  or disability taxes are what knocked us down on the list.

I'm surprised Pa isn't around fifth. The two lost cities Pittsburgh and Philly have been voting socialists into power for the last fifty years, and they are wondering why they keep getting taxed more and more. Our elected have a favorite pass time of sitting around thinking up what tax they can bang us with. So they can better our lives.
Don't forget our second term Governor who is nothing more than a criminal. With him at the helm its a wonder Pa is not first on the list.

Its a bit to hot for me down south. I will probably stick around here and pay my taxes like a good little citizen.

Yea really. Did you guys here the new one Pittsburgh is thinking of trying? They want a sugar tax. They want to add 2 cents per ounce for soft drinks and other items that contain sugar. Give me a break! :o >:( That means a 20 ounce bottle of soda pop will cost an extra 40 cents. Dale

Diet soda has an artificial sweetener, I'm sure our elite can call sugar what ever they want to. Now you all know that they have to to apply this tax on soft drinks so we don't drink to much and harm ourselves. Heaven forbid some of us get to much sugar. I mean what we would do without our chosen ones watching over us?
This soda tax is just a small taste of what is to come under Obama care.

Dalescarpentry:  nys already did that - we call it the fat tax for parents who can't keep their fat kids away from sugary drinks.  But, the sobs also put that tax on beer - them lousy commie pinkos.

Isn't it moronic to tax a object but not place the responsibility on the parents to keep their fat, undisciplined kids away from unhealthy foods.

I'm thinking we should tax anti-gunners enough to fully support all the police efforts it takes to protect them, and tax the parents of fat kids for the additional healthcare costs their fat kids will incur as a result of their poor parenting.  Think that would get their attention?????

How did Oregon escape the top ten list?  The only tax they don't have is a sales tax and that is more than made up for with their state income tax.  Their latest attempt to drive business out of their state is a tax on business gross instead of net.  And this was wrought by the people (the ignorant libs) who voted it in.

Really though, these taxes are not to benefit we the people, as our elected say they do. Its like the taxes on cigarettes. They heap taxes on tobacco and say its for our own good. In other words they are saving us from ourselves.
Does anyone really thing our government really cares if cigarettes are harmful to us. Or that sugar makes fat kids. They just see cash cows. They just use the term harmful, so in the peoples eyes they are doing it for our own good. Its just a way to extract more money from us. They assume the masses will just shut their mouths because they tell us they are saving us. It appears this ploy does work for them.
They could give a rats a** if you me or anyone else kills over from cigarette induced cancer or from obesity. Its all about power, power and more power. Also control, control, and more control.
If our government really cared about people, I figure they would do something to stop the mass murder of unborn children.

Remember the Pittsburgh drink tax imposed about a year ago. there was a little fuss, now all is quiet. The Pittsburgh communists were saving people from drinking to much. Are we not lucky to have these people steeling money from our pockets in the name of safety?

Our liberal socialist pig newcomers here in Vermont have worked long and hard to chase away industry and to acquire number one status on this list.  So far they've not touched our gun laws but are trying hard this year. My house is now up for sale and I'm looking for new digs in a more retirement-friendly state.  No big cities for me though.

Every time I think about moving south I think about taxes and decide I am better off right where I am.  The only taxes I have to worry about is Federal Income tax.  We do not have a sales tax, (The cities of North Pole, Soldotna, Wasillia, and Juneau do have a sales tax, mainly aimed at tourist).  We do have a property tax, but being a disabled vet they waive the property tax.  And I get a check from the state just for living here each year.  I usually use it to buy a new gun every year.  Just think about it, the state buying me a new gun every year.  No I don't want to move south.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough, I don't blame you a bit for being skeptical about moving away from your tax situation, but putting up with all that cold and dark would be worse than any tax for me.  In a way, I've had some of the same dilemma.

Before I retired, I had just about had it with our weather, so we started spending time in Arizona and Southern California.  It's very easy to get used to the weather there, but not so much in the summer.  After retiring, we spent a lot of time in Arizona and it was good for a while, but I guess even constant sunshine isn't everything.  For the past couple of years, we've stayed closer to home here in the PNW and I've had a very good time.  Either I've come to terms with our weather, or "global warming" has begun to bring the south a little further north.  I dread that our weather will return to what it was for a time back in the Eighties, or Nineties.

Anyway, I guess there is nowhere that is perfect; you just have to pick the non-perfect that you can tolerate the best.  Right now--all things considered--it's right here in the Great Northwest.  Come on down here this summer, you'll love it.

MN. has just three short steps till #1 baby. Now if we all pull together we can make this goal, who's with me?... Who's With Me?

FREE HEAT for EVERYONE now WHO'S WITH ME? I love it here but, dang there are a lot of free loaders. They do keep the state clean and the roads are pretty good, but dang there are a lot of free loaders. I see a few signs of early Michiganism starting I only hope some one is paying attention in St Paul.

Here in WA. state we don't have an income tax but it gets brought up every other year and is always dropped because of it being politically unpopular. But now that we have a $2.8B defecit they are starting to crank up the machine to spew all the tax ideas they can come up with. We voted in I-960 a few years ago that needed a super majority to raise taxes over a certain limit (2%?) then would need to go to the people after that. Gov. just signed that away so the legislature is free to do whatever they want. We don't pay sales tax on food but that may be in jeopardy. The state sales tax is 6.5% base but where I live it is 8.3% and rising. Gov. has new proposal to house and only comes up with $800M so we still have $2B to go. Of course all the usual crap about cutting services like fire and police and not about cutting entitlements. Same song and dance to blackmail the people into going along with them. Oregon just voted a tax hike on the wealthy (whatever that means) by the people that fall for the class warfare scam. Now Olympia is saying "Hey maybe we can do it too!!!." This state has had the CA liberal virus since the 80's when they started to flee their state in droves. West side of state is lib and East side is conservative. We need to become our own state so our tax dollars will stay here rather than go over to the blue side of the state. Just a fantasy to most of us who've live here all of our lives. Steve

It is funny how people take a little stat and twist it a little to make a point.  What you see in the HIGHEST taxed states is because most of those states on this list is amoung the top 50 HIGHEST STANDARD OF LIVING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!

Not saying that I want to pay more taxes but the states with the higher rates tend to have a higher ranking of the standard of living.  Why is that?

 8) :o :o :o I was surprised to see Wy. even on this list...our property taxes are low, and no income tax...6 percent sales tax...the lodging tax is maybe 10 percent...certainly no more than Denver...I wonder if the tax includes the industries like the coal, gas, and oil....They are raping the state as it is...and really getting away with it at minimum cost....

@ steve y....Know what you mean...I live in Southern Oregon, and we wish we could lop off Portland, Salem, and Eugene...the liberal majority ( and major populations of the state!) there is voting measures like 66 and 67, as you stated, raising taxes on the "wealthy"...read that business and industry! The Mayor of Chicago said he really liked 66 & 67, means more business might leave the state and head his way...said he would welcome them with open arms, tax breaks, ext....

If it were not so silly it would be funny.
The whole idea of multiple taxes is to have 6 taxes that are low rather than one that is high and all you end up wit his 6 that are medium to high.
Speaking of Diet we need to put the legislature on a diet.  If they raise a fee or tax we deduct double the % from thier budgets.  If we have to do with less so should they.

I am sure it does include the minning taxes and being on the list they are not getting away with it.
Be careful what you wish for.  you may make the tax too high on mining and when they leave the government is going to fill the gap left by them with your check book.

I was glad to see that New Hampshire was 2nd to last on that list. No sales or income tax is always a good thing!

A better question would be why is the per capita income rising in States that in years past were poor States
like Texas, Georgia, NC & others & the per capita income dropping in States that in the past were the wealthiest, but now are heavily taxed ? And why is unemployment getting so bad in some of these States? And why in many cases is this occuring in the Unionized States? When I was a lad alot of peopple from my State would go up "North" to get a job. But in the last 25-30 years I never hear of anyone going up North, if they leave they go to GA. or TX. Of course right now there is no good place to  go, but why the shift, hmmm?  ::)

Could it possibly be because of Unions, Taxes & more State Gov. control? Naaa, surely not!! ;D
