Folgers Coffee, and SaraLee Shutting Down!
« on: March 26, 2010, 01:11:30 PM »
Folgers Coffee plant in Sherman Texas is shutting down and SaraLee Bakery plant in Paris Texas shutting down within the next 12 months. Folgers is about 8 miles from me, and Saralee is about 65 miles from me. I'm sure glad the economy is getting better. Jobs are hard to come by around here already.

No body doesn't like Sarah Lee.
It's the Police and LA County cut backs.  The local CA police announced along with LA county that they will no longer supply snacks for morning meetings.

I'll be going through Paris tomorrow. Sad to hear that they are losing jobs.

Looks like they are closing the plant in KC also

Smucker's, based in Orrville, Ohio, bought The Folger Coffee Co. from Procter & Gamble Co. in 2008. At the time, the Kansas City plant employed about 160 people.

The overall initiative is expected to mean the elimination of 700 jobs, about 15 percent of Smucker’s work force, and about $60 million in annual savings.

Smucker’s brands include Dunkin’ Donuts, Jif, Pillsbury, Crisco, Hungry Jack and others.

I used to haul coffee to the the KC plant also. I was wondering about that one. Economically it makes sense. All their coffee comes out of the PORT OF NEW ORLEANS, and they were haulin it all the way to Sherman Tx, (over 500 miles) processing it, an then takin it right back to the Folgers in New Orleans.

Just an observation of the times--using history as a benchmark.
We are/were due for a fiscal cleaning---the pendulum swing thing---and WE brought it on.
That does not mean it is the end---but it may mean that the pendulum has reached the end of one swing and will star back the other way.
Now, WE, corporately are the reason, we had a good wave and rode it to the end. The government can only prolong and hamper recovery by bail-outs and such. We elected these fools.
If we remember that when you are up too your AZZZ in alligators you are there to drain the swamp, things will turn around more quickly than if we hamper the process.
Yes, it will be painful.
It is, what it is.
Blessings

I'd love to know if these closings have anything to do with osamas hc fiasco. I know a small business man who said he will have to pay an xtra 4 million a year and will be forced to cut the 401k by at least 4 %. I believe unemployment is going to take a huge jump upward. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

i do wonder about other companies who don't NEED to cut back and do it anyway because they can blame it on the recession, getting rid of people to pad profits and not because they needed to.

i know they're in business to make money but they need to remember that those people help them make that money, too.
I have it on good authority that the telepromter is writing a stern letter.

Dunno how you define "small business" Charlie but to me anyone who is gonna hafta pay an "extra $4 million" and has a 401K plan for employees hardly meets my definition of a SMALL business.

i know they're in business to make money but they need to remember that those people help them make that money, too.

The only excuse the publicly traded companies think they need is "We have an obligation to our shareholders" and they've been using that one for years.  Yes they're getting rid of people to pad profits, maybe moreso now than before but it is because they're as uncertain as we are IMO.  They also seem determined to push their stock prices up despite what the market as a whole is experiencing, sometimes to the extent that they throw out the baby with the bath water.

The flip side of the closings is that the folks in the plants that are still open are worked to the bone picking up the production from the plants that closed.  They can't stand up against it because they feel lucky to have a job.  It is wrong for corporations to be paying out so much overtime when there are good, competent folks in their community needing a good job.  Companies do have a moral obligation to contribute to their surrounding communities.  They're falling down on that one.

They'll tell you and I that "If we don't remain competetive, you won't have a job at all" but to me that is just a "race to the bottom".  They'll work it like a big pyramid scheme for as long as they can make money and then move on to something else, leaving us as collateral damage.  Pretty optomistic aren't I?  :-\  I've been a peon in manufacturing since '87 and have seen companies go from building infrastructure for future growth to the paradigm of "If it won't make a quick buck, we won't fund it".  What are we leaving our kids?

By gosh, I pretty much agree with you Curtis. The construction of the new plant in Orville will eventually bring some jobs back, but most will be gone. Smuckers, in my experience, is a tad bit better in their treatment of employees than most modern-day companies; there are far worse.
Obama can't be blamed on this one. I went through not one, but three plant closings in the Reagan/Bush 1 era. The cheap-labor/sell-granny-for-a-buck modern day (post-Goldwater) Republicans have done more damage to our economy and national security than the fuzzy-headed liberals could have ever dreamed of.

Having hauled into all the Folgers plants in my coffee days, and to Sara Lee in my milk haulin days, I don't think it has anything to do with Obama. I think it is just a sign of the times. With fuel costs going BACK up it will kill a bunch more businesses that barely survived in the last fuel crunch.

Walmart is doing that now, nothing but pure greed at the top. It's gotten even worse since I quit them, haven't had to take any nitro since. Hard to find help anywhere there now, it's costing them millions in sales and they are too STOOOOOOOPPPPID to see it.

Why would you keep people on the payroll that you don't need? A guy running a business is not running a charity! He  is there to make money. If having more people will make him more money you can bet he will hire them. If he has more people than currant conditions call for he is going to let some go.
I just don't understand the idea that someone owes you a job.

Havin run two businesses that I "started myself" and "financed myself", and "took all the risk myself", and "responsibility of myself", I wholeheartedly agree. If you do not like the way your boss is running things, start a business YOURSELF, and run it the way you are suggesting. It will be interesting as to how long you last.
Realistically, the boss owes you for work done, and nothing more. He doesn't owe you or your family health care, or retirement unless he agrees to it. A days wage, for a days work.

They DO need 'em beerbelly, they just try to eek by without them.  Sometimes that sacrifices the product integrity and sometimes it just makes the workers who are left work until they have no family life.  If they have to do it short term to survive, I understand.  If they're doing it for greed it is inexcusable.  If they are doing it for the stockholder then it's just another avenue for redistribution of wealth (poor "lower middle class worker" to rich "the majority of players in the stock market").

BEERBELLY. When a product is out of stock at wm it's either that corporate cancelled the dept mgrs order, or it's in the back room with nobody to run the freight. In any event it's poor mgt. Thats what happens when those in command have never worked the floor  or dealt with the public and truth be known never worked a day in their life. They are their own worst enemy because they lose thousands of $s a day due to ignorance. You can't do away with customer service and expect to do well in any business.
We were in a $ general store a while back and I mentioned that there were a lot of bare shelves. They told me that corporate now orders everything, also that the dog food I wanted was in the  back room but hours had been cut so bad there was nobody to run the freight. Saving money?? Nope, they are losing sales and customers. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
