barrel break in
« on: December 22, 2002, 06:12:53 PM »
I have heard/read different opinions on the need of breaking in a barrel.  What is the general opinion here ?
I have heard this is mostly just a way to get you to buy more barrels and have found a couple of major barrel manufactures that do not see a need for it .
I have a brand new 26 inch bull .223 barrel that is all ready to go .
base ,rings and leupold scope mounted ,barrel clean and 77 detailed hand loads ready to go.

I have read some of the gun manufactures suggestions that you shoot up to 100 rounds before you even begin load devolopment , in a barrel that has a life of 5000 rounds That translates to 2% of the life of the barrel . If a barrel maker does 1000 barrels a year and can increase it by %2 Thats 20 barrels .
