zoner scores a Marlin
« on: March 27, 2010, 05:39:47 AM »
got a call yesterday....a friend is getting married...his new wife doesn't want any guns in the house....so next weekend i will be the proud new owner of his uncles pre-safety Marlin 336 30-30 with walnut furniture for the grand total of (choke) $200 cash. I'll admit my first suggestion was to re-think the getting married thing but he's determined so the next best thing was to "help" him get rid of that darn gun. I made no price suggestions or bartered etc,he set the price and everything. Just once I was in the right place at the right time...Mike :D

Yep - Sounds like your friend got hypnotized.

I'm glad to see someone who appreciate it get it, ILO it getting thrown under some porch to rust away to nothing, like my sister did to her first husband's guns.

i've owned guns all my life and the 336 Marlin is one I always wanted but just never came across the right one at the right time. It'll look real good next to my 1942 m94 Winchester and my 30-30 Handi ;)

You did good. I love my marlin 30-30. Great deer gun especially iun heavy wooded areas. My son uses mine for now but I'll get it back one day.

Any woman that would not allow guns in the house would not be going home with me. It's not just the gun thing to me. I had the same situation with a girlfriend that didn't like me playing in bands. I told her that my music was around long before her and would be here after she was gone which wasn't very long. I just didn't like the ultimatum.

How is he going to hunt now?

i asked my wife how she felt about guns within the first two weeks we dated. she was unsure and didn't really like guns, but after i explained a few things, like how a gun is just a tool and is only as dangerous as the guy holding it, we got that issue straigtened out. ;) now she goes to gun shows with me and doesn't seam to mind a loaded pistol on the night stand. i feel sorry for your freind, but i guess he did it to himself, worked out good for you. ;D

Well if he only had one gun that may not be a problem to him.
You can bet if a woman can make you get rid of your guns that is only a start. :(
Mine doesn't like guns won't hold one but will not say anything about me having them other than what did you get
this time and are you happy with it
Your friend may wish he had ask some more questions. ;D

My Sweetie is not only FOR gun ownership, she saved up her pennies and surprised me with a Ruger .357/9mm Blackhawk which had been sitting in the shop for a year or so.  I guess I was the only one interested in it, I would drool over it every time I was at that store.  Then somehow it disappeared during our move from Alaska to Ohio.  Strangely enough, it was packed in a box with several rifles, and that one box was the only one of all our household goods which was already opened when the movers came to unpack our stuff!  The moving company did reimburse me for it, but I still am out a gift from my wife!

Congratulations on the new Rifle! Save it and keep it safe for him, if he is a good friend, cause I am pretty sure he will come back after it one day. Seen those things before when the new wears off and she gets worse, and she will, he'll be back!

Welllll, today was the day.....and yes the Marlin came home with me. No safety, gold trigger, the stamp says Marlin 336. The wood has a few small dings, the metal is 95%, the action is real smooth and very tight,no looseness or "slop". This is one of those guns that have been moved around a lot but fired very little....a super deal. Anybody got a link i could use to determine year of manufacture?

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:
Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number:
1946-C
1947-D
1948-E
1949-F
1950-G
1951-H
1952-J
1953-K
1954-L
1955-M
1956-N
1957-P
1958-R
1959-S
1960-T
1961-U
1962-V
1963-W
1964-Y,-Z
1965-AA
1966-AB
1967-AC
1968-AD, -68
1969-69
1970-70
1971-71
1972-72

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

Great snag, I have a 1949 Marlin 30-30, shoots great and looks great.

I agree with someone else here, your friend should loose his man card. I would not care how good a woman looks or what she does, I won't get ride of my guns.

i think i remember folks talkin about the heavy trigger pull on their marlin leverguns here. I haven't checked the pull weight on this rifle with a gauge i did snap it a couple times and just guessing i'd say it's breaking at 3.5-4 lbs...i'm sure not planning on working on the trigger,it's perfect for me.Did i get lucky or was that normal for guns made in the late 70's?

My 336 was made in 1967 and i don't know what has been done to it
but the trigger is smooth  and crisp, don't think it could be better.

Zoner you just got lucky, all the way around.
