Any 22-250 accuracy issues?

  The reason I ask is because I was at the gun counter this morning.  There in the used rack was this Ultra Hunter in 22-250.  For the price ($309 cdn) I thought was a real good deal.  Haven't read too much about them.  I probably should have picked it up for the stock and reciever.

They're great if you keep the bullet weight 50gr and under, the 1:14" twist just doesn't do well with heavier bullets, my fluted Ultra shoots the 50gr Vmax under an inch.  ;)

Sounds like a great Cdn price.

  That's what I was afraid of.  Sounds like something my won't want to hear.  Sooooo i just won't tell her.  I was thinking about using 40 or 45gr bullets in it anyway.  Looks like when I go back and it is still there it was meant to be.  You know it is only one more,just one more.

Cliff,

My wife has a 22-250, 22" standard contour.  It shoots the 36 grain Barnes Varmit Gernades very well, under 1" @ 100 yds.  ALso does well with Federal Factory 40grain bullets.  Fun gun to shoot, I just wish she would let me shoot it a little more.  Probably want to load for it yourself as the ammo is a $1 per round or more.  One more gun never hurt nothing, if she doesn't find out about it.

The only bullet I reload that shoots what I would consider extremely accurate is the 34G bullet Midway sells (Dogtown). A very short bullet that is not affected by spin-yaw like the longer bullets in the 1 in 14 twist barrel. Useless beyond 250 yds but a killer from there in. 50g is also what I would consider usable in the 1-14 twist barrel.

H&R Ultra Varmint 22-250 (SB2-F22) @ 100 yards, Remington UMC JHP 50gr:


I was told the first shot was a fouling shot.
Now, I run a pad with "brake cleaner" to dry the bore before the first shot.
I do this everytime now, problem gone.

This ammo works so sweetly on my Ultra Varmint that I am considering using it exclusively.
