My marlin model 30 shoots high at 50 yards and I was wondering if anyone knows of where I can find a taller front sight? I removed the elevator from the rear sight and it still shoots high. Thanks for any help, Worm.

R U sure that the top of the front sight is being held well down into the rear sight notch @ firing ?

I've never ran across a Marlin that didn't shoot fairly close to the barrel sights - usually not needing a taller front sight until a receiver peep was added.

A previous owner might have changed the front sight, for a lower one than issue, but the correct font sight height can be calulated after the amount of inches high @ 100yds the rifle is hitting is plugged into the formula.

www.skinnersights.com has a sight height calculator on his website, along with front sights.

Williams Gun Sight Co, Lyman Gun Sight Co, and Marbles Outdoors are only three of the several other companies that make sight blades of various heights, thickness', and sight materials like Ivory or gold or fiber-optic beads.

IIRC, your rifle's front sight is a direct barrel mount (no ramp) - so IF you obtain another sight of whatever height or bead, be sure to get one with a WIDE base that completely fills the barrel dovetail (side-to-side).

if you call brownells and tell them how high it is shooting at 50yds or 100 they can tell you exactly what you need.
i am puting a lyman 66la on a 336, he told me to shoot it first set where it was comfotable then call with measurments. If i remember correctly ?
it is how high it is shooting in inches X length between front and rear site in inches divided by length to target in inches
will tell you how high front site should be, you will then have to measure hight on your site. I have this writen down at work. I may have to find me a 12-13 year old kid to help
me with all this calculations.

When I got the rifle there wasn't an elevator in the rear sight so I just assumed the guy had lost it. I had an extra elevator and installed it on the last notch. I shot 170 and 150 grain bullets in it and aside from a little variation from the bullet weights they both grouped around 7-8" high at 50 yards. It dropped a couple of inches when I removed the elevator, but was still around 5-6" inches high. I measured the front sight from the base of the dove tail and it measures close to 7/16". Tru-glo has sights up to I beleive .530 inches high. Does anyone think this would be high enough to bring the groups down? This rifle will mainly be used to hunt groundhogs and to target shoot as we can't use centerfire rifles to hunt deer with. I really like this rifle espeacially after I installed the full length magazine tube that Winter Hawk gave me. My eyes aren't what they used to be and it wouldn't take much to get me to install a scope on it, but would rather not if it can be helped.

I had the same problem with my .32 WS and I ordered a taller front sight from Skinner (Google Skinner sights) and that solved the problem

Typical Marlin front sights aren't going to fit the Glenfield 30. It's completely different. I've never seen a Marlin/Glenfield that wouldn't shoot to it's sights.

Although it could be me, I've been shooting for around 32 years and know how to align the sights on a rifle. If I bury half the bead behind the rear sight it shoots just a touch high, but close enough to kill ground hogs. I was thinking maybe I could cut the notch in the rear sight deeper. Has anyone tried this?

For now I went ahead and bought a 2 piece mount at wal-mart and put a 4X32 scope on the rifle. Picked up an extra 40 rounds 150 gr. SP to sight it in with and hopefully nab a few ground hogs later in the day. Good thing is, is I'm getting plenty of brass to reload later on down the road.

If needed get a v file and take down the rear sight,dont take it down to much at a time,if you do you could put the ramp in it.

I really like the looks of those xssights with the scout mount and ghost ring sights. Hard to beat a good scope for shooting and hunting, but I like the idea of always having the open sights as back up in case something happens to the scope. I'm going to try and sweet talk the wife into letting me get one. Going out to sight the scope in today and hopefully go GH hunting once it warms up a little more.

I just changed out both sights on a new Rossi 92, replacing them with Marble's. I got them right away from Buffalo Arms. Their website has an extensive array of Marble's front sights. You should mike the front sight that you have, and get a front sight (Marble's, Williams, Lyman just to name 3 common suppliers) a size or two higher. This shooting high or low thing I've found to be found quite a bit with Marlins over the years. I had the same problem when I bought my 45-70 in 1982, and later with a 25-20 that I bought when the Classic series came out. I should have sent that 25-20 back--I ended up needing a ramp and sight just to get the thing elevated enough to shoot with a Williams FP.

Got the rifle sighted in the other day. Shoots 1" high at fifty yards and groups just over an inch with remington 150 SP's. Need to take it to my buddy's range and see what it will do at 100 and 150 yards. I don't have the room to do it here at home. Really starting to like this old rifle. I'll be bothering you fellas here in a few weeks to find a good load to reload for this rifle.

Not really looking for anything hot or fast just like to reload a little. Used to reload for my Dads 357 rossi when I was 11 or 12. Between his 16 gauge double barrel and that lever gun a lot of ground hogs met their dimize. All I had to remember was to pick up the empties.

A good 170 grain jacketed bullet and some IMR-3031 would be the way to go.
