45-70 SS thumbhole stock?
« on: March 28, 2010, 06:18:21 AM »
Any of you boys got one of the new ones with the SS barrel and thumbhole stock?  Since my son uses handis, I'm thinkin I'd like one of these.  Not sure about the thumbhole stock, but that could be traded out.  Just wondered what your thoughts on the gun are, for those that have one.

They're great shooters like all H&R 45-70s.  ;)

Hey quick,  thanks for the prompt reply.  How long you had yours?  Also, wondering about availability?  How well do you like the thumbhole stock?

I bought mine when they first came out in the summer of 2008 for $382 shipped from Bud's, his last price was $404 and he's out of them now, and unfortunately like many other H&R offerings, availability right now is pretty sparse. :-\ I like the t-hole for bench shooting, but not for carrying. I swapped out the thin padded factory stock for one of the Boyd's that comes with a Pachmayr Decelarator, the thin pad isn't real comfortable shooting hot loads from the bench. But I've since gone the other way and will be hunting with a nice light rifle, a 6lb-7oz scoped Superlight custom bored 260 Remington Handi, I think my days of hunting with a 9lb rifle are in the past.

I almost ordered a new Handi-grip 45-70 from Bud's, still tempted, but I'll probably just wait and buy a stock for one of the 45-70s I already have, maybe for the 26" 45-90 Wayne is making for me.

How well do the thumbholes hold up to recoil?Do they have any issues with splitting or anything?I know laminated wood is very strong, just looks like the thumbhole area would be weakened with such a large amount of wood removed.

They've been available from the factory on the 12ga USH for 3yrs now and I've not seen a problem reported yet.

Thanks, I'll post updates in my 260 Rem thread, I'm rained out for the next week according to NOAA, so I won't be shooting the IMR4320 loads in Rem brass for a while.  :-\

We've had some nice weather, mowed the lawn 6 times in as many weeks, was able to mow Saturday fortunately, it'll need mowing bad by the time we get our next dry day which isn't in the forecast yet, but the rain appears to be tapering off toward the end of the week, maybe  next week will be good enough to shoot too......dry weather just in time for turkey season which opens the 15th.  ;D
