I was thinking about waiting out Midway since they're projecting a mid-April availability. I paid $6.50 for a tin of 100 #11s on Saturday. A tap-o-cap for $30 and a few thousand paper roll caps could keep me in caps for the rest of my life.

If only I had an easy way to make powder ...

I just got mine last week from Natchez that has been on backorder way before Christmas. They say to use U.S. caps for best results. All the Walmart stores only have caps made overseas. Sam Fadala gives a pretty good report on this "gaget" in one of his books (I've not tried mine, yet).

Read a little about these on a trad muzzle loader sight. The general opinion of users was that the caps did not offer consistent or reliable ignition of black powder. Some mentioned doubling or tripling the caps to get reliable ignition.

Some place in my big box of "Treasures" I have one. Tryed using it but the only thing i can find is caps made in jpan. There not even the same size on a roll. Had a address (web site) for a company that had caps, kids cowboy and cowgirl outfits. Had e-mailed them and one of their people said they carryed caps made in Germany and were a lot more powerfull than any others. Was gonna order some and had a major putter crash and lost every thing/ Was just thinking about this last week, and gonna give the German caps a try. With the jap caps it takes 2 or 3 to light off pyrodex powder/ Must have about a 1000 or so caps made just need to put some good caps in them. I have over 1500 store bought caps that most were given to me, sitting around but like the saying go'es "More Is Better".
Got mine from mid-south shooters about 3 yrs ago.

The CCI #11 caps I bought about a year ago were $2.89 per hundred and even as poor as I am I can't see making them by hand for that price, especially not for a very inferior cap. Toy caps are VERY corrosive and not very reliable. If you just want really cheap caps which kind-sorta work forget the Tap-O-Cap, just buy the plastic ring caps and cut the individual caps free. They are a soft plastic which will stretch to tightly fit number 10 or 11 nipples. They are fairly reliable with real BP, I've never tried them with subs. But again,  clean the gun very thoroughly with water after firing toy caps, they are corrosive as all get out.

I can't find caps cheaper than $5 a tin locally. Even at that price its worth it to me just for consistancy and peace of mind.

I had a couple tins of Remington caps that were given to me by a widow. Two of the tins I burned up during regular shooting and only had one or two duds, acceptable in my book considering I couldn't vouch for their history. So the next tin got loaded into my capper and ended up making their way to a rondy. Only half of them would fire and the ones that did didn't give reliable ignition. I don't know that happened to them over the course of time befor I got them but they were garbage. I finnally just dumped them all out and made the walk back to camp for a new tin out of my box. However that was enough to break my concentration and I shot very poorly. I am still pissed about that too. It would have been even worse had I been hunting and missed a shot because of a faulty cap. It will never happen again. I take pride in my shooting and $5 is a pretty cheap investment to remove one variable that stands between me and bragging rights.

Now if I could get consistant and reliable ignition out of a cap I made I would definetly look into it for practice and plinking. However I have never heard of anyone getting anything close to even 90% reliabiltiy much less the 99.99999% I would demand. If I am wrong please set me straight.

Not wrong at all, I totally agree and I think the success rate with homemade caps is probably more in the 50-75% range. And how long would it take to make 100 caps? A couple of hours? And don't count the half that don't fire. I work cheap but not that cheap. There is a lot to be said for flintlocks!

CCI #11 is now $7 per 100 in my part of the US ... and not getting cheaper. Cartridge ammo has nearly tripled, and primers alone are ridiculous. Just paid $29 for 1# of 777, gladly. Is everyone predicting a drop in the cost of shooting, is there a firearms use stimulus package in congress I don't know about?

Seems to me it might be handy to make yer own caps, cast your own lead, for your as of yet unregulated BP revolver, given the way things seem to be going in the future. A flinter long gun would be smart too.

Just remember your BP revolver in N.Y. has to be licensed and put on your permit.
