« on: November 15, 2003, 12:03:53 PM »
Ok I bought a " Spainish Gaurdia in a 308 win"  now I'm hearing how bad it is??   Just what is wrong with it? it shoots great!  should I rebarrel it? to what?
If it is not safe how can Federal Arms Co. sell it?

Thanks

308 Spanish Mauser G.C.

I have one had it for going on 3 years now.  Have put nearly 500 rounds though it and it shoots just fine.  I have a scout style scope (1.25x4) on it and it will hold right at 2" at 100 yards, nothing to write home about but for a $100.00 rifle better than I could have hoped for.  It just loves my 165 grain handloads.  There has been talk about these some good some bad.  These rifles were originally chambered for the 7mm Mauser a lower pressue round.  It seems that some of the imports were made with "soft metal" and the Spanish round (I do not recall the name) is not the same as the NATO 7.62x51mm,  so although the NATO round chambers in these it is too much pressure for these guns with the soft metal.  I would have a good gunsmith look it over thorough before shooting it.  Remember if you handload you can always load down to the Spanish specks.  If not sell it and get a Enfield in 308 or one of the rechambered Mausers there were some coming out of Isreal and also Egypt maybe Big Bill will jump in on this one or Mr. Gill with more information.

I was hoping to rebarrel it to a 257 Roberts?

GUARDIA .308

I HAVE A GUARDIA .308 AND IT'S RECIEVER IS VERY SLOPPY WHEN RETRACTED. SO I USE IT FOR "LEAD" LOADS ONLY SINCE THEY HAVE LOWER CHAMBER PRESSURES. IT DOES JUST FINE IN THIS CAPACITY.
