Talo .357 Mag is Now a Talo .357 Max!
« on: March 30, 2010, 04:08:24 PM »
I got the reamer from Tim in the mail today. I set the box on the end table by my chair with every intention of doing the job tomorrow...didn't happen that way though.
To make a long story short, I couldn't wait.
I don't mean to sound repetitive here, but if you have ever wanted to do this but were afraid it was outside your abilities, don't sweat it! In truth the hardest part was getting the extractor out. That roll pin was kinda tight.
The tap handle Cutshurt made and put in the kit works like a dream. The reamer is still going strong, it was about a five minute job. It was kinda scary how fast the tap was going in, which I would guess is a sign it is still good and sharp.
After cleaning everything up I tested the rifle with both .357's and .38's. Same point of impact as before, it was as if the rifle couldn't tell anything had changed.
Now to get some Max brass and see what the rifle can do.
Thanksto Tim, Cutshurt and everyone else that has contributed to the .357 Max information and to GBO for this wonderful site!

Good job and great to hear.  Some fellas will surely want a range report of that barrel.

I remember when I did mine, and I thought!   Is that it?

I pulled the reamer out and looked at it and there were just a few shavings on the end of the blades, and I placed it back in and checked to make sure it had seated all the way that is was supposed to and it did.

It took longer to clean up the reamer and package it back up than it took to do the job.

I sent the reamer off the same afternoon I got it!

If you don't do this, you are really missing out!

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Jimbo, I had the exact same reaction! The technical side of me knew it was only removing a lip the thickness of the brass and 0.30" long, but I was still thrown off by the lack of shavings. In fact, if I hadn't been pulling the reamer out every 2-3 turns and cleaning it I would have gone WAY to deep. The reamer is polished to such a shine it can be hard to see the rim cutter. I pulled it out to clean it and saw the faintest of scratches on the rim cut in the barrel. I couldn't believe it was already done! I had to put it back in and visually check it again to prove it to myself (looking through the extractor groove). I was being paranoid about the oil (didn't want to be the person who dulled the reamer!) and had an excess on the breach around the chamber. It almost caused me to mess up a fine rifle!
As soon as I get some Max rounds I'll punch some paper and post the pics.
I am probably going to order some loaded ammo from Reeds (a GBO sponsor). I priced their Max ammo and it isn't any more expensive than .30-30 ammo at walmart. 2-3 baoxes and I will have enough brass to last me a pretty long time.

I ordered .357 Max and .445SM from Reeds last week.  Their website showed the Maxis in stock and the .445 backordered.  I haven't got a shipping notification yet on the Maxis.
