« on: March 30, 2010, 04:13:20 PM »
The O'gonCoyote done got me all fired up with his new "Storekeeper!"  That Bisley hammer really sets it off!   :P

Does anyone know offhand, before I start buggin Uberti or invest in a Bisley hammer ($70.00 ouch!),   :(  if they are interchangeable with the regular SAA hammer?   ???

Yup, and apparently neither will USFA's "Birdshead" hammer.  :(   I got a reply to my question about it from them.  Darn the luck, that Storekeeper sure has a nice look...  :-\

Atlaw, you are just going to have to open your wallet (please let those moths out!) and go out and purchase one of them thar USFA Storekeepers!  You know you want one!  (so do I)  Ha ha.  No matter what we have, we always want something a little different.  It's a good thing that guns are so much cheaper to swap than wives!  44 Man

I thought that Powers Custom was making the "drop in" kit, just be sure to get the altered transfer bar too. This will also give you the half cock option I believe.

AtlLaw, please fill me in. what did USFA say?

i was under the impression that the birdshead-hammer uses the same design as any model Colt or USFA standard hammer and thus would drop right in.
(unlike a Bisley hammer that requires a bisley-designed frame)

or are you saying that the USFA birdshead hammer just won't fit your old EMF Dakota (because it takes a different hammer than a modern Colt or USFA)?

What they said was the hammer would not fit without modification.  No details.   :-\  It kinda suprised me also. I figure they would have said yes but some fittng may be required.   :(

But then, why sell a hammer when you may be able to sell the whole gun.   ;)

strange...

i guess that the only way to know is to go buy one, compare it and if it won't work then simply re-sell it.

i'd bet a bunch of guys would love to take one off your hands.

Have someone who knows how to weld, cut the Bis hammer and weld it to the original hammer.  That's how this conversion was done a few years ago.  There were a lot of them made before the "Storekeeper" was ever offered with a Bis hammer.

What an interesting thought!   :o

I imagine you mean cut the hammer like you were going to bob a double action hammer, them weld on the Bisley thumb piece.   :-\  I wonder if JB Weld would work...  :D

It was a popular conversion with Rugers.  Hank Williams Junior had a few done that way and were written about.  It seems like a straight forward weld job for someone with the skills.

you got it atlaw just as soon as i get a chance to get to it! this bisness of workin two jobs and doing gunfights and gunsmithing on the side has me wore to a frassle i will see what i can do
the idea is to leave enouff of org hammer that the fireing pin will still work and get a good weld to attach the bisley portion  of the hammer, rather simmple alot easer than fitting the bisley hammer  and trigger, back strap not mention bolt engagement and timing
