Picked up a new Rem 750 in 30-06 last night.
« on: March 31, 2010, 04:52:41 AM »
Well...  It finally came in.  Last January I put a special order in Dick's Sporting Goods for a synthetic Remington 750 in 30-06 with a 22" barrel.  I always wanted a 7400 but never bought one because of the accuracy and reliability issues I was hearing about.  From reading different reviews it sounded like they had those issues worked out and the rifle was ready to go hunting so that's why I bought one.  There was a great article about the 750 on guntests.com back in 2007.

When I got it home, first things first and it had to be cleaned.  Wow, I can see why people have reliability issues especially if they never take it all apart and clean it.  Mine had more than enough thick creamy gray grease.  It was well protected against rust, but needed to be cleaned and oiled before it can be taken to the range.  The trigger group was just like an 870 shotgun and easily removed so I had complete access to really clean it out.

I loaded some 220gr & 165gr handloads into the magazine and they cycled manually just fine.  I was very happy to see that since I plan on using this rifle for a bear hunt with the 220gr loads if they shoot well.  The magazine is a little picky and different than I'm used to, but it'll work for me.

I did some dry firing with the rifle to get a feel for the trigger and I was happy with it.  It's no Savage accu-trigger, but it'll do.  I plan to scope it with either a burris ballistic plex or a nikon BDC scope in 3-9x40.  The scope base is in the mail and after I get it out to the range I'll let you all know how well it shoots.

Hey thanks for the info.  I didn't know they had that out.  The scope mount should be on my door next week and then hopefully I'll be off the range sometime soon after that.  I'm hoping to make a nice range report regarding this rifle because finding a decent review of the rifle before purchasing was hard to do.

I have read there were issues with the Mag 's when they fist came out as well as the rifle rifle jams . The jams could be repaired with trimming the reciol spring, explaned else where on this forum , and so what to do with the Magazine 's .
I have not invested in one of these rifles for the issues listed ,and also the report of heavy triggers . But today I am sure , most things have been resolved and hope you injoy your new investment .
Happy hunting

I haven't had a chance to make a good range report yet, but this rifle has been to the range now.  I've only had it out one time, but I fired handloaded 165gr SPBT's, 168gr HPBT's, 220gr SP's, and factory 168gr gold medal match ammo.  Between all of those I fired about 75 rounds total and had zero malfunctions.  I wasn't blown away with the accuracy, but it wasn't anything to be ashamed of either.  I was very happy with the reliability since I never had any problems with the rifle.

This first trip to the range was primarily to "break-in" the gun.  I don't know if that's necessary or not, but I wanted to put some different ammo through it and make sure that it functioned well.  So far, I'm happy with it.

On my next trip I'll be taking several different boxes of factory ammo and testing them out for accuracy.  After that trip I'll write up a full range report including pictures.  I want to do a good job on the range report because I wasn't really happy with the ones I found when researching the gun.
