You don't need a guide for moose or caribou...  Kiana??  Did you mean Kenai??

It is Kiana.
Kiana, due east of Kotzebue, (air port there)

No guide needed and probably a better chance for caribou. Sounds like maybe unit 23

Thanks for the help.
I have wanted to do this as long as i can remember.
My son was in the Airforce with this man, he told my son to plan on Sept. incase we did not get a Moose we could go for Caribou.
I know my son has said you can only get to Kiana by boat.
I am guessing you can fly into Kotzebue.
If i can pull this off i will be set for life.
When i graduated from High school in 1965 i had an aunt and uncle that lived in Anchorage, they begged me to come stay 6 Mos.
I didn't and have kick my butt ever since.

There is an airport in Kiana. MOST Alaskan towns have airports of some sort. For more info on Kiana check this:

http://www.commerce.state.ak.us/dca/commdb/CIS.cfm

and follow links from there or there is a more detailed version if you go back to the main website.
Well - good for you, jump on the current opportunity. Great time to start planning. Good luck.

Have any of you hunted in this area?
being from the lower 48 seems pretty remote on the map.
anyone have any idea on the chances of connecting with moose or caribou,
or what else.
If i can put this together, will a 444 marlin with say 265gr levereloution
do the job?

I would guess most caribou taken up there would be with 223,7.62X39 and 7.62X54. On caribou you get one.Moose is open sept 1-20 and its by drawing permit so you are out of luck this year as its over for the drawing. Also to hunt unit 23 you need their hunter orientation for moose and caribou. You could hunt wolf. Unit 23 seems not to be a last minuet hunt

I have never been in the area. A 444 will do the job but often when caribou hunting you can be on open tundra and shots can be longish. You'll need to find out more about how they actually hunt around there. I'd lean more to a 270 to 300 or even 338 win. If you were to be hunting river crossings a wide variety of cartridges would work as you're more likely to be shooting close.

Maybe Rex from Kotzebue might have a better idea........

I saw that the moose was a draw, maybe we need to try and do this next year or decide if Caribou alone is the ticket.
If their is some one from Kotzebue on here i would sure like to hear from him.

It might take years to get lucky with the draw. For the price of one caribou you could probably hunt deer and black bear in the SE plus better fishing

here is a picture of Kiana in the August 09. FYI.

I'd bet the dirt in the background is the air strip.

Thanks for the pic. I looked it up on the site you gave me earlier, good read,
lots of basic info. Looks like we are going to regroup and see what we can work
out. I am a little concerned about spending that kind of airfare $$ for Caribou.
I can also hunt deer and black bear down here for a lot less. I would like to go to
Alaska fishing myself.

Fishing might be good around Kiana too. Looks like a lovely place to me. If I had a chance to go there and a place to stay, I would - what ever the reason. With national parks and all its spectacular countryAn acquaintance of my wife spent part of her time growing up there - now she's some high power bank official.

They have sheefish - a rare and wonderful sport fish that is great eating. I've eaten them but never caught one. Tarpon of the north some call them. There should be arctic grayling and arctic char, possibly pike and salmon too.

Fish and game info. I don't know this guy but give him a call or email him.

I just found out the lodge in the post Dand made is where we would be going.
Looks like the fishing is pretty good there.

Looked mighty nice to me. But make sure to know when the best time to go is. Alaskan fishing can be very time sensitive. Its not always good all the time and not all fish are available at the same time.  I used to have to explain this to folks coming to my area: no you are not likely to fish the best king salmon, best silver salmon and best rainbow fishing all in a single one week period.  That is IF you have a choice of when to go. But man oh man if you can get into those Sheefish - that's a special treat.  The char and grayling are nice too - grayling don't get real big - over 17 inches is a big one. But if they are on the bite it can be incredible with light gear or fly tackle. Once as a kid I got into grayling where by the end of the day I could barely lift my arm to cast my rod. I probably caught over 100 that day on flies.
