I live within 80 miles, have worked short term in and out of there for over 20 years and get there about 1 or 2 times a year now. #1 it, is NOT on any connected road system, is somewhat depressed with the closure of the military station and commercial fishing situation. There are huge rainbow trout in the Naknek River, can duck hunt along the river (the town is kind of strung along the river) and there is other hunting and trapping. Caribou herd is severely depressed and basically closed. If the Mulchatna herd (also depressed) wanders over there, the season can be opened by special ("emergency") order. Lots of sockeye (red) and a small king salmon run are in the river as well. Its gritty and dusty as the whole place is built on sand and the wind blows quite a bit. A big tree might go 25-30 feet as its right on the tree line. Quite a bit of alder and willow brush which is a lot taller than it was in the 1970's when I first worked there. Snow is inconsistent and often blows and or melts off so snowmobiling conditions are highly variable in winter. Look up Naknek as well as King Salmon since they are connected by a 15 mile paved but wavy road. There may be some websites with info for both communities. By a lot of standards its not a show place - more a frontier outpost. But there are a bunch of good people and a few grumps there.
Here is a link to a lot of state information on King Salmon Ak:

http://www.commerce.state.ak.us/dca/commdb/CF_BLOCK.htmhttp://www.nps.gov/katm/planyourvisit/nearbyattractions.htmAlaska has boroughs instead of counties. King Salmon is in the first ever borough formed in Alaska. Here is a link. The boro offices are in Naknek but it serves KS too.
http://www.theborough.com/Lots of lodges and air taxis are based in or close to King Salmon so google King Salmon AK and you should get tons of pictures and info. Just remember a lot of it is for tourists so some of the warts are hidden. If you like adventure and don't mind roughing it some, including brown bears in your yard, it can be a great place. Oh and the Naknek school has a nice auditorium and pool - unlike my town. You can go fishing before or after work - or duck hunting. It can be pretty expensive and there is no Bon Marche' or the like.
