H&R Quality

Those that have bought handis since the takeover, by Remington not the Democrats, what is your opinion. Make the case why they are better now than a CVA APEX or SCOUT.

cant compare really, dont own an apex, infact I had to look them up to see what they were  :P

for half the price, Im gonna stick with the handis, I dont need the changeable barrel system so that is a mute point.

its more comparable to the T/C platform really. over the counter barrels, while these have to be fitted and the frame sent in.

Good luck

i feel that it hits the middle. bbl changes for less than a tc. bergara bbls have good repution. cva has accuracy claim. ss rcvr too. shouldered one at a bass pro, felt real good! apex will accept new bbls, scout cheaper version with no bbl options.

If it turns out not to suit you, how you gonna get rid of it?

Those that have bought handis since the takeover, by Remington not the Democrats, what is your opinion. Make the case why they are better now than a CVA APEX or SCOUT.

The CVA is a nice rifle..but still not more than the Handi. It has some features the Handi's don't but no where near the following.Availability of the Handi's is a bit of an issue right now,and a bit uncertain for the future since it was taken over by Remington, but I can say of the Rifles I've seen come out since the take over all have been very good in quality.

What I have found (at least around here ) is the lack of CVA's center fire products, and promotions. The places that do stock them, tend to stock more of the muzzle loaders than the center fires..and it's basically an after thought with regards to the center fire barrels. Mostly you will find whole rifles side by side..and with money being as tight as it is..the way they are pricing the Apex rifles is very close to MSRP..were as not so with the H&R..This isn't knocking the rifles..but the way the distributors are getting the rifles out to the dealers, and how the dealers are selling them. This was/is the exact problem with the Optima Elites as well. This problem is something company was made aware of back when the Elites first came on the scene, and apparently they don't care to correct.

Can one make a case for either if they try..sure they can..but..until CVA gets off it's butt and does something with their distributors/dealers network and starts actually promoting them more ,they won't really ever become mainstream enough to supersede the Handi rifle or even the Encores. Another thing that is holding them back is having a decent wood stock..while synthetics are becoming more popular..they will never completely appeal to the masses as being the only thing you can have for your choice of stocks..Most folks like to be able to switch the stocks around..just as they can for the barrels..this is one of the tributes to a break action single shot rifle..BTW...they know this too..and have yet come up with a suitable wood stock for it due to the frame design and the stock attachment point. They did correct the trigger issue and make it adjustable somewhat..but not the stocks..PEOPLE LIKE WOOD STOCKS...WILL YOU EVER LISTEN CVA... Also..they have to have a variety of barrels available on hand..most stocking dealers I have found just keep a few of the basics..if any extra..which is a pain to many since many still won't buy things on line..They were supposed to be coming up with some instore display racks to showcase their products..but they never did as far as I have seen..If they ever do correct a few simple things then they have a chance to become the defacto leader of the single shots..if they don't..then I see them going the way of another very nice break action single shot rifle..The Mossberg SSI  that one could have been a real contender..but was handicapped by the company from the start..and that was a real shame..

For now..the Handi still gives the best bang for the buck..and at least here you have a ready made place and eager people to buy them from you..not so much with the CVA's..and resale matters a-lot in the over all scheme of things as gcrank1 is pointing out..but that too could change if Remington keeps screwing around with production schedules..and starts jacking prices..because this will raise the prices even higher here for the barrels and stocks..

Easy, when the Gun Ban Crowd gets it way, they will pick it up for you!

Well, I own both and love to shoot both. I have the CVA Apex .50 ML and am going to buy a .243 barrel this week for it. The fit, finish and quality of the CVA is top notch. It is very comfortable to shoot and is extremely accurate (ML only now). The trigger puts almost all other factory triggers to shame, it is that good. My Optima Pro also had a great trigger. However, it is a lot more expensive and longer. The barrel alone is as much or more than a complete H&R. I like my H&R because it is more portable and was a lot cheaper and is accurate.. Both are very accurate with the right loads. I think the CVA is a little better, but that's just me. It all boils down to what you like and/or can afford. I have airguns that cost twice what my Apex cost and my buddy has one that costs 5 times as much, or 10 times as much as an H&R, but we still shoot our H&R's and love them.

Handi is a $300.00 rifle, a basic, shooting iron.  They're light, portable, easily broken down, and fun to shoot.  They make great rifles for grandkids and nephews.  And for old farts who like single-shot rifles.

I learned this week that when I take a Handi apart I can stow it in the saddlebag of my motorcycle.  What's not to like?  I've got three of them now, (.45-70, .30-30, and .308) with a 4th on layaway (.223).  They're reasonably accurate and require very little tweaking.

I've got no complaints about the quality of a Handi rifle.
