WOOO HOOOOOOO (got'em)
« on: November 15, 2003, 05:24:14 PM »
I shot my 8 pointer at 9:00 this morning guys and girls. I was after that bruiser for all of this archery season and last archery season and i brought him down!!!!! And with every great deer there is always a great story.

Day started out with me getting in the stand at 6:00. If i would have went in any earlier i would have gotten lost. Anyway, the plan to get behind the houses in the afternoons didn't work out because of how thick it is in there. So if i didn't get him in the morning chances are he'd live till rifle season.
getting off of the story....sorry
from 6:00 until 8:50 i didn't hear or see a single deer. My feet were frozen and fingers were unmovable. I packed up a little bit and lowered my bow down. take the safety harness off and put the backpack on. So i go to take a step and a white gleam catches my eye. I look over into one of the couple openings in the swamp and there he is. about 100 yards away and angleing away and towards the deepest part of the swamp. I hurry up and take the saftey harness and get it back on, pull the bow up and get an arrow re-nocked. He starts to head for a thicket about 70 yards away.
I get "the can" out of my bag and start calling. I called until he picked his head up and then once more. It's all it took for him to pick up the pace straight toward me. Then about 40 yards away he turns and goes into a thicket. I knew he would because it's about 2 feet deep and FULL of nice size rubs. I scanned i over quickly and saw only one shot available. all other would be a bit risky. A couple seconds later there he was standing broadside
I put the green pin on him and THWACKKKK. He went RIGHT DOWN.
The only problem from there on was getting him out.

I'm waiting on some pictures from another site so when they are up i'll post the link.

Congrats on the very nice buck!

The thrill of the chase to me is the essence of the hunt. Bringing down a wily old monster like that is just the culmination of the whole experience. May you eat venison all winter, and reminisce about the hunt your whole lifetime.
There is no more humbling experience for man than to be fully immersed in nature's artistry.

you're darn right i'm getting it mounted #1 hunter!!!!! This is my third nice buck (10,8,8) and none of the others were mounted.  I have to at least get this guy on the wall.
I love the neck on that thing.  I forgot to measure but it's at least 20"
Details are that it had a 17 inch spread, 8 points, about 140 pounds field dressed and i guess around 150-155 live weight.  Called in with the Can at the peak of the rut and shot on THE LAST DAY!!!!
YEE HAWWWW....now i don't have to go out in the cold rifle season;)

the can is an estrous bleat call.  All you do is put your finger over a hole, turn the can over and the reed slides to the bottom to where your finger is.
This is the most fail safe call out there.
And i know a lot of people that mess up when calling. ESPECIALLY THE GRUNT
Instead of going urrp....urp.....they go urrrrrrrrrp.
that is WAY to long to be anything.

It all depends on what you are saying to the deer. Some vocalizations can be very long and drawn out.

myk, I understand that but all the deer i have heard or seen in the rut have had a very short grunt.  So thats what kind of grunt i like to use.  It called my buck in once before but i couldn't get a shot at him.
