When I got into the low end ruger loads, I made a lace up leather cover with loops to hold some extra cartridges.  I also put a little padding in it.  Not that I needed it mind you :-)  it reduced the bruising dramatically.  Thanks for the load.

Thanks Tim. I've come to the conclusion that you'll run out of case space before you could max out the .45-70 with 5744. Once again, the BC butplate will get you before the pressure.
The load is pleasant to shoot, about 20 ga. recoil. I'm 6-2 and 300 lbs, so that but plate doesn't quite fit my frame.

I use 5744 in the 45-120, a full case of 5744 in it would run 126kpsi!!  :o ;D A more moderate load at just 63% load density and less than 40kpsi pushes a 405gr bullet a little over 2000fps. H4895 is a bit better pushing a 500gr bullet at 1800fps at less than 31kpsi, but it's really position sensitive, if the powder isn't all the way to the rear of the case, it hang fires.  ::)

I put my Ultra Varmint lam wood c/w recoil pad on my 38-55 and, even though the recoil is no comparison to 45-70, it became a real pussy cat. I am very recoil sensitive due to an old whiplash injury.
If you tried a similar buttstock on the 45-70 Im sure it would make a big difference. The drop is different and it recoils straighter back too.

I've found the same thing with IMR 4895, so I use a pinch of pillow dacron under the bullet to hold the powder against the primer.

The more I use 4895, the more I am impressed with it.  I use it in almost every bottle-necked case (and .45-70) and while it may not be the best powder for every application, it certainly suffices in lots of  applications.    It's almost like Unique for rifle cartridges.

That was my next step, but haven't done any more work with it, thought about using Puflon ballistic filler or just cream of wheat even.  ;D

I'd be cautious of COW in bottleneck cases, though, there are incidents of the necks being blown off and stuck in the chamber or even up the spout.

Who said anything about bottlenecked cases? Discussion is on BCs, they only come in straight walled chamberings.  ??? T'wouldn't make no nevermind to me anyway, I don't shoot no stinkin girly loads that would require a filler, bottlenecked or straight walled.  ;D

Tim

On second thought, maybe Tyler or Richard would think 500gr loads at 1800fps are girly loads!!  :D

I know you wouldnt do it, but sometimes less experienced people read a mention of, say, use of a filler and the next thing you know they are asking about why a case neck is stuck in their chamber because they didnt realize it might not be the thing for their caliber.

Well, the .494 front sight came in the mail today. I'm going to try and change it out my self, I have a couple of brass drifts at work of various sizes and a vice. I pulled up a how to video and it didn't look to complicated so I'll give it a shot.

Howdy all.
I have the 38-55 target? and the buffalo classic.
Shot a box of factory thru' the 38-55 and got a sore shoulder so put a pad on the BC before I shot it.
Mite spoil the lines but it sure saved my 73 year old shoulder. I haven't shot either of them very much .
I also cut about .100 out of the 38-55 front sight to lower it. It shoots a couple inches high at 100 yards now.

I just finished changing the front sight. the only issue was getting the new sight started but after using a very small file to clean up the corners it went right on. After reading FAQ I spent the night worrying about getting the old one out but with the use of a big hammer it was no problem.

I love both mine.  I have a .45 Colt and the 32" BC.  Both shoot excellent.  As for recoil, I have found that for $35 I got a Limbsaver small size slip on pad and it works great with the narrow crescent stock.  That way I don't have to modify it and I use it for both.  It also fits my .50 cal Hawken Rifle's stock, so I use it on all 3.  I shot 100 rounds between the two guns last week and had zero pain during shooting or the next day, other than some stretched muscles.  I have a pretty thick shoulder and before about 20 rounds was all I could stomach.  I have just finished loading up a set of 25 rounds with 350gr Dardas cast .45-70 bullets, with Jim Shockey's extra gold FFFg compressed about 1/16th inch.  Was supposed to shoot them today, but wind got up too fast to do good groups.  I have used the Hornady 325gr FTX bullets with the Shockey's gold with good luck, so hoping these will work well.  Nice bullets for the price too, but got to see how they shoot.  My favorite I shoot the most currently is the 325gr FTX with 46.7gr of Reloader7.  That gives a good push, but no severe kick. ;)  Great round for deer or just accuracy in general, although I'm hoping to help my Grandfather clear a bad group of ground hogs from his farm soon.  ;)
