What happened to the BC topics?
« on: April 01, 2010, 02:20:04 PM »
I don't think about much except my BC 45-70.  I've got a family and a job and a church and lots of other guns, but I can't quit looking at and fondling the long-barreled BC Classic.  Sometimes I think maybe it's not real--that I have just dreamed up an American made Sharps style rifle that cost so little and performs so well.  When I found this forum, they were all the rage, and everybody and his uncle had a range report or question about this very significant rifle.  But lately, no one has anything to say about them.  I loved reading all the threads about sights and loads and animals harvested with that gun.  What happened?  Maybe with the nice weather, sportsmen are thinking of fishing and girlfriends, but they're still posting about other Handi's.  I don't get it. I just wish somebody would post something about what they've done lately with their BC.

Here is your chance. Tell us about the last time you were at the range ;)

I love my Buffalo Classic Carbine in .45 Colt. I hunt thick New England woods and my shooting range is only 75 yards so it's perfect for my needs. If I buy another Handi for myself it will absolutely be a 45-70 BC.  ;D

I've had mine for about six weeks, took it out today and fire a few rounds. My 15 year old son finally worked himself to shooting it, he smiled so hard after the shot I thought the top of his head would fall off. I absolutely love everything about this gun except that it came with the wrong front sight, I'm all the way to the top of the rear sight ramp just to zero in at 75 yards.

Not unusual, most of them come with the wrong front sight, get the .494" or .404" tall 17A sight and you'll be much happier.

Mike, stick around, the BC will be back. A bunch of us just got bit by the .357 Max bug and have been concentrating on it!
I've had my BC since '04 but just recently started reloading for it. With the damage those 450 gr. bullets were doing to my "Shootin' Hill" I had to decide to either start another Handi project or go into amateur mining!

And I swap my wood around onto different calibers so technically my .22LR/22WRM is now a BC I suppose.

I love my Buffalo Classic. Only problem is I can't see for nuthin.
So committed blasphemy and mounted a scope on it.
I still shoot it all the time. The dang thing is a hoot.

For what it's worth I mounted one of those federal intensity scopes on it to see if they would hold up.
So far I've only shot the little 340gr thru it. I've got some 500gr cast up ready to load.
The scope held up fine to the 340's.

Try this one Mike.  Went to the range a few weeks back.  Took my daughter and one of her college friends (Tiffany) along mainly so they could relieve a little stress shooting the semi 9's.  I took my BC 45-70 and some other non handis to shoot in case they had some major stress to work out.  Tif wanted to shoot the BC so I set her up on the bench with a shooter's friend slip on pad and some Winchester white box 300's.  After getting her settled in and solid she touched off the first round.  She looked up at me with eyes as big as saucers and said, "I want to do that again."  Nuf said.  She ended up shooting close to half a box before she quit because we ran out of time, not because she was done.  Great day at the range with the girls.
This is the day the Lord has made.  I choose to rejoice and be glad in it.

I have two BCs myself. I am new to this forum and find it most interesting. One is the limited edition Golden Buffalo in 45/70 that cost about a $ 100 more than the standard but looks really cool. The other is the carbine model in 45 LC which I shoot regularly and is a real hoot. I wish they would come out with a 30-30 or a carbine version in 44 magnum.

Who would I need to contact, H&R or the sight manufacturer?

Trying to order sights from H&R can be a real test of your patience and I don't even think they carry the correct sight, I'd order one from someone else, got mine from Buffalo Arms, Brownells sells them also, make sure you get the 3/8" dovetail.

You might want to consider the Lee Shaver inserts too, they're pretty nice.  ;)

Still enjoying my BC and yes I still take it out and caress it just for fun.  Just trying to find a load that I really like.  24 grains of 2400 behind a 500g Lee shoots pretty good but different lead alloys seems to change it quite a bit.  I have shot it out to almost 1000 yards and seems to shoot pretty good, but at that distance I was just seeing how close I was hitting to a yucca.  What a kick it was to pull the trigger then sit and wait for the dirt plume when the bullet fell through the target.   Problem is, it was some old mystery lead (phone cable i think) that I had and I haven't been able to reproduce those results with wheel weights.  My brother in law was shooting the same distance with a 25-06.  He was hitting it too but the results were far less spectacular.  I also played with some black powder loads but haven't got very serious about them.   So does anyone have any good powder/ lead combos?

I love the look of the vernier sight on the BC.

I need some more advice, if i'm going to be taking most of my shots at less than 100yrds, what front sight would be more practical the .404 or the .494?

.494", the .404" would give you better long range capability. The .404" in combination with the Williams FP-TK on my 45-120 shooting 405gr Rems at 1500fps hits 1½" high at 100yds with the rear sight at the bottom.

wouldn't that Vernier sight hurt some if you coiled your thumb around the stock wrist?  I'm thinking about my 45-120...  :-\

LowNSlow, I wish I could get a better look at that aircraft in your avitar.  Looks like a P51 turbo conversion airframe, but that would be right stupid on a bi-winger!   :D  What do it be?   ???

I love my BC to the point my wife gets jealous.  Shoot around 50 rounds a week still (nothing is in season) at my brotheres farm or a friends where I can shoot all the way out to 1000.  Just haven't posted anything new lately because I haven't done anything new since I put the Krag sight on it.  Expect that to change when I get a Kentucky rifle triggerguard to put on.

AgCat,

Ah So, that explains the power and bi-plane configuration.  Makes perfect sense now...  ;D

Sorry the picture didn't work out.

I was surprised to see how inexpensive a new shorter front sight is for the BC. I've never changed one out before so I'm thinking I'll bring it to a gun smith just to be on the safe side.

There's a thread in the FAQs on swapping the front sight out. I've done a couple with no problems, but when my smith(not Wayne York) removed the sight from my first BC before rechambering it to 45-120, he ruined the globe and I had to wait 2 weeks to pick it up so he could replace it.  :-\

The vernier sight doesn't bother my hand, but it will sure poke me in the cheek if I get too close.  Normally I leave it up and put the eyepiece high enough that I can look under it when I'm using the Williams sight.  The shorter sight would work fine because even at 1000 yards I'm nowhere near the top even with BP loads and it wouldn't poke me.

I love mine too. I have to get off my duff and call H&R to get them to fix the front sight though. It is installed at an angle and I have to move the rear sight all the way to the left to get it on paper. I have not shot it that much but 1 1/2"-2" groups at 100 yards are pretty easy.

My little one wants to shoot a Bison (Saw them doing it on tv the other day) If I decide to, he will use this gun to do it, with handloads that he loads himself. I think that would make it little more special.

lrrice, I am using 30 grains of 5744 behind a Goex Black Dawg 450 grain cast bullet. Starline nickel brass and Federal large rifle primers. It's above trapdoor loads but not into the Ruger loads. It's not too bad, at 30 grains that cresent steel but plate only leaves small bruises. ;D

30gr of 5744 under a 450gr bullet isn't even a top trapdoor load by SAAMI standards, Lyman lists 33gr under a 475gr bullet at 25.2kcup, the SAAMI max average pressure for 45-70 trapdoor loads in 28kpsi which equals 28kcup.  Even tho Lyman lists it as a Ruger load, they're not up to snuff concerning the three load levels, Hodgdon and Hornady both use SAAMI standards for trapdoor pressures. ;)
