Fragile grips?
« on: November 15, 2003, 06:33:13 PM »
My new Vaquero has the simulated ivory grips. When I bought the gun on Saturday they were fine.  I picked up the gun on Tuesday, and they were a little loose. When I got home I tried to tighten them, but the screw just turned and turned. It had been stripped out and the inside of the grip was chipped/flaked in two spots, above and below the screw hole. Some one at the shop probably noticed a little wobble and tried to tighten them, however, he took it a little too far.

I was VERY careful not to over tighten the new grips that came from Ruger. Are these ivory grips super fragile? How about the Micarta grips?

Yes, the ivory polymer grips can be somewhat fragile.  I have a pair on my Bisley.  If and when they break or bust, I'll fit a pair of micartas to the revolver.  Just wish I had some of the real stuff.

On the other hand, I have found the micarta grip panels on my FAs to be extremely tough.

Try a pair of the grips made from Corian. They look nice, and are tough as nails.

Hey thanks for that web site. Those are some beautiful grips. I have always liked malachite and couldn't believe they had a synthetic malachite that looked so good. I've got another Bisley that I think needs a set of those. If the Ruger ivory grips break again, I think their Tru-Ivory will go on to replace them. Those Slightly Aged look pretty good . . .

I just had a heck of a time finding grips for my Bisley that FIT! I sent back three pairs because of big gaps between grip and metal. I finally took it to a gun show a couple weeks ago, and settled for a set of Altamont ivory bonded. I tried several of them on the gun, and even grips from the same manufacturer varied a lot. These fit nice, and my wife is going to send them off after hunting season is over to have some laser scrimshaw done on them. I wasn't to happy with the white on blued look at first, but they're growing on me, and besides, I like the scrimshaw idea. Good luck.
